I think both are necessary, and awareness needs to exist before we can even get to acceptance. It's kind of sad that there are two different words to create different movements because it further creates that divide between families of autistic people and autistic people themselves, which I think is quite counterintuitive, personally. But great explanation!

I think that awareness without understanding or acceptance carries a huge risk of just being a vehicle for hateful and/or misinformed people to continue spreading harmful stereotypes and misconceptions.

I'm not a huge fan of autism awareness, but I believe in autism awareness when necessary. Like the unemployment rate of autistics, autism suicide rate, racial inequality when it comes to autism, etc. My problem with autism awareness is that parents, and medical professionals are in the center of the conversation about autism. I have nothing against parents and families of autistic people speaking about autism and being an ally of autistic people, but my issues is when parents, families, and medical professionals are speaking over autistic people and talking about autism without autistics when it isn't their place in my opinion. I do love acceptance since it shows the positive side of autism. I think it is important for autistics to set boundaries and speak for themselves no matter if they are verbal or nonverbal. Like I said, I have no problem with awareness when necessary, but awareness isn't cutting it sometimes.

Autism Awareness is without understanding, prejudice and ignorance. Autism Acceptance is with understanding, knowledge, gifts and talents autistic people have.

This is great! I started out as an autism parent and have come to know that actually we are an autistic family. I can see how my own awareness has turned into acceptance, I love your explanation ♥️

Having spent the first 53 years of my life not understanding why I was different/shunned/single I embraced my discovery of autism totally as a celebration that my difference is not my fault.
Autism is a blessing.

We need both scientific awareness and understanding of autism and acceptance of autistic people. I light it up purple.

Honestly, I'm new to your channel and I am @utistic. The reasons I subscribed to your channel (two reasons, one minor and silly, which attracted me to your channel and the other more serious), are one: Your eyes are piercing and pretty (silly reason, but they are 😁), but what made me stay is that your perspectives are 100% on point with mine. I agree with the CONCEPTS and INTENTIONS of @utism awareness: to inform, educate, and bring understanding to people for @utism and I think this concept is semi essential in accepting @utism, but what it ends up being more of is just parents explaining how we are different and that brings about being treated differently and segregating us. That's why I support @utism acceptance, because in truth, differences are what make us human, they shouldn't be highlighted for people to segregate more. Inclusion is more important than wrongly "spotting the differences." We are no less human than anyone else. It's so rare for me to find people who think like this, so I happily joined your channel. I say, go red instead of lighting it up blue (which is sad because blue is my favorite color, but oh well, red is still great and it's the meaning behind the color that matters). Thank you for this video. Also, I've had to use the @ sign because my comments get deleted otherwise.

We are spreading something we already spread a long time ago. It's not awareness that's important anymore, it's acceptance that's more important. Each year, we are spreading the exact same thing. Just get newer ideas, people!

If you know what the words mean then you should know the difference.
..
WHAT!? Some people... think autism awareness... is a negative thing? HOW THE HELL?! This blows my mind in a bad way. I'm so sick of people who make no sense and projects their own negative ideas on something that is literally not a problem in any way. Before I started researching autism I had no idea there were these kinds of extreme people and opposites within the community.
Autism awareness is just a term... It has no extra meaning to it other than what it means, which is to spread awareness about austim...

I'm aware of human trafficking but don't accept it. So, when I was younger being on the spectrum meant I was considered moronic. Oh very nice, not! I just didn't act like other kids. Nevertheless, I did post-graduate university study with Honours & Awards - but didn't make friends. People are generally ignorant & it didn't take a virus to create social isolation for me. But that's ok; I cope very well. Like I watch IndieAndy because he's good looking otherwise I couldn't if he was ugly - I don't know, prejudice is everywhere! Cheers for us 😁😂
