Empathy is not always a good thing. People who work in the health profession such as nurses, doctors, counsellors, therapists and even those in law enforcement, emergency medical services, fire services, people that are exposed to victims of trauma and violence, they may experience what is known as compassion fatigue or vicarious trauma.

As individuals, managers or employees, you may also experience vicarious grief and trauma while helping or listening to people who have experienced and gone through trauma and distress. Hearing, watching videos and material about trauma may also impact one's personal mental health and wellbeing.

To understand vicarious grief and trauma, let's first look at how trauma and grief are defined and their subtle differences in this clip from a Vicarious Trauma Training (VTT) course facilitated by Georgia Bolton, one of our Mental Health Specialists at The Workplace Mental Health Institute (WMHI).
