China’s relaxation of its strict one-child policy in 2016 and 2021 has not led people to have more children, Dr John Donaldson, associate professor of political science at the Singapore Management University's School of Social Sciences, told CNA’s Asia Now.

"People being forced to only have one child causes population decline, " experts find. Really impressive. How could anyone figure this out by themselves??

'996' work culture also reduces the time to properly raise a family. Too tired, stressed, and exhausted.

Family value has changed. Having children, compared to lifestyle enjoyment, is no longer the priority, unless pressured by parents.

The problem was not implementing the one child policy but taking too long to lift it. China was did not take into account that urbanization and development itself would actively discourage people from having more kids. You see this is most developed countries like Singapore, Japan and even America. The population explosion is caused mainly by poor undeveloped regions and countries.

Surely this is good news for China and the planet

That's another major issue he brings up, that most of the young people lost will be in the cities so even the young people they do have will be the less educated rural ones.

I think many experts misrepresented PRC 1-Child Policy. 1-Child Policy discourage having more than 1 child, not disallowed. After the first child, parents need to pay hefty fine (2x to 6x annual income) for each child.

Why people so worried about population decline ? The only ones who seems to worry are governments and business, it’s all about their ( $). It would be good for the planet actually if we went from 8 billion people to 3 billion.

india is 1/3r of china but most of india is habitable. See Heihe-Tengchong line. 94% of china's population lives east of this line. West of this line is not very habitable.

It is basic Geography knowledge about Population Pyramid. A developing country’s population pyramid will have a wide base (high birth rate) and as the country becomes more developed or industrialised, the base will narrow. A highly developed country will typically have top as wide as the base. China has moved from agricultural to industrial developed nation within a short period of time. This is totally expected.

Forget about that policy, who the heck wants to raise children that are destined to be enslaved to the papa state no matter their efforts in life ?

a huge typing error spotted at 6:57. China's birthrate is not "6.77%" but 6.77 births per 1, 000 people @CNA.

This situation is not just affecting the PRC. Social observers have noticed this phenomenon as homogeneous in societies that have reached first world standards.
Recognising this fact is not enough to provide an effective overall solution to this and other related issues.
There is a need to make paradigm shifts in a wide respect in societies globally, not just at national levels. I am of the opinion it is because of the enormity of this fact that deters the majority of our global population to admit to this necessity let alone embrace this need.
But I am confident, given time, we will relent and prevail.
I hope!

Focus on solving problems instead of just creating more people (increasing birth rate) to solve this complex problem. Automation and other technologies can ease the labor force shortage, immigration can help ease aging population. Be more creative and think out of box.

(China’s falling population may not be due to its one-child policy) I love this choice of title.

Same problem with Singapore. Young couples cannot afford to live in Singapore. Government better look at affordability immediately.

This isn’t just unique to China, but pretty much any country that’s achieved some level of Development. As countries got richer and more developed, its population is less likely to want to have children. They are more focused on career or Pursuing other interests instead of being tied down with raising a family. This has been the case for Japan and South Korea for a while now. Not to mention Europe is also going through the same thing and even here in the United States.

It's part of the reason it's a lot more complicated than just the one child policy did.
