China doesn’t have 1.4 billion people. Its population is under 1 billion.

Recently, India became the world’s most populous country. But India might have taken over China a while ago. People question China’s claimed population of 1.4 billion. Yi Fuxian, a leading expert on China’s demographic data, has said that Beijing inflates its population and fertility rate. The Russians and the Japanese estimated that China’s population might be as long as 800 million. Based on recent studies on newborn vaccines, pandemic travel, and salt consumption, I think China’s real population is under 1 billion.

Salt Consumption Study:

Post production note: Here is a comment from a viewer on the calculation of the 2023 population. He is correct. Please read his note below:

Lei, in the Travel Comparisons chart, the Chinese population field is a derived number (Total Commercial Person/Trips, divided by Average # of trips pp). The denominators in 2019 & 2023 are different (3.04 vs 2.50). As such, we should not take the quantity change of (1,389) and divide it by 2.5. We should instead work out the 2023 Chinese population (less 422m "Poverty") by dividing 1,595 by 2.5 to derive 638. Then deduct this 638 from 986 for a change of (348).

"Under 1 billion." I've felt this for a while and I'm glad people such as you are talking about it.

Ms Lei, as a new fan of your channel, (from Singapore) I love your values and the meticulous approach to 👍tackling each topic, not to mention your small little giggle that adds to the charm, that we enjoyed. 😅

Lei, before I listened, I thought under 1 billion to be far fetched.
I am aware of Yi Fuxian's analysis, and I accepted that number.
However, you presented a couple of studies that are hard to refute.
You convinced me. Under 1 billion, almost for sure.

My feeling visiting Shanghai 2001 and eating in the factory restaurant in the daytime was that Chinese people then ate way less salt then we did in Sweden. I actually had a hard time coming back after 2 weeks and almost puking from the salt in my wife's cooking. Second visit in 2019 Beijing the difference was much less but still did not have the feeling they eat more. My current girlfriend is from northern China and I would say our salt consumption it quite lower then the Swedish average of about 12g. This would indicate even lower population maybe. But 40 year ago China wast quite a different country. Could they not have used a lot of salt to preserve food back than and now they use freezer and have more food security and don't do home preserving as much.

My wife is Chinese. I lived in China over four years and returned 15 years ago. Wife's daughter lives with us here in Amertca. China doesn't have one child rule now and one reason is because of aborted baby girls, not enough wives are available. Lei is right, population rate is declining. Lei is on the mark.

Truly Terrific. I really like the efforts put by Ms Lei in her talks. I humbly request her to kindly create a backup channel where her videos would be available for public view as under sheer political influence YT may restrict or severly restrict the online videos.

Years ago someone wrote "don't worry about what you read coming out of China." A friend who worked for the State Department kept repeating this to me for years. Over time as I've seen how Chinese statistics were artificially inflated I've learned to at least think about that advice. So the idea that they might be under a billion even is consistent with everything I've seen that confirms the addage about not worrying about what you read out of China.

Great videos as usual. Peter Zeihan has also been saying that China has a significant demographics issue for quite a while and has suggested that many of their stats are worthless. I feel sorry for the Chinese people with such a lousy government.

In America, the national highway safety data show that the most dangerous speed is 55 mph. This is caused by data collection errors. When the cop on the scene asks how fast you were going, most people lie because they don't want to get a ticket for speeding. This system seems to be how you describe the Chinese data systems.
