For anyone who doesn't get it, or only half gets it, John played a trick on the rulers of hell to get his soul back by simultaneously selling it to three different powerful demons. They can't claim it because it would be a declaration of war on the others. That's why John's "tatty soul ain't worth two bits" to any normal demon. It's not worth the trouble it would bring them.
