I'm pretty sure it's explicitly pointed out by Zinia that, while Mega Rayquaza was the first Mega-Evolution, it wasn't the first Mega-Evolution between a Pokemon and a singular trainer.
Also, for Drayden, since Unova is canonically supposed to be further removed from almost all previous regions and probably many of the following ones as well, that Pokeballs simply might've not made it to Unova, at least not as a standard thing, until his childhood. Also gotta consider that they were made from apricorns, yet as far as we can tell none of those grow in Unova so Pokeballs would've simply been an import good until the modern ones popped up.

To be fair with Drayden, he may have meant that he remembers a day *Unova* didn't have pokeballs, because i think it is mentioned in the unova games that pokeballs are a relatively recent phenomenon in the region

Quick explanation with the first megas: Lucario was the first to mega evolve the normal method (keystone, lucariorite and trainer) while Rayquaza mega evolved without a mega stone, and multiple people. Hopes dreams and belief or something. Rayquaza is just GOATED.

Honestly, it's entirely possible that the modern pokeball wasn't mass-produced until recently. Remember that you craft them by hand in PLA! Handcrafted items are generally expensive so it may be that owning a ton of pokeballs (or any at all) was a luxury and that the mass-produced, modern pokeball is fairly recent.

The pokedex thing ain't wrong at all, ones a journal and the other is a high tech machine that tells you everything about a pokemon via scan, that's like saying book and a cell phone are the same cuz they have words in them

Like everyone is saying, Prof. Oak defintly created the first digital pokedex. Because in SV we learn the pokedex app in the Paldea region was created by Mr. Jaque. So the pokedex having multiple creators makes sense

I think maybe Poké Balls weren’t introduced in / brought to Unova until when Drayden was a kid, and that’s what he means. That’s my only explanation 😅

I feel like Drayden saying that is like my grandpa saying "cars didn't exist in my childhood" either they would be primitive compared to now OR it references the war which could've stopped pokeball production for any number of reasons ao he didn't grow up with them
