Inside Hong Kong's Coffin-Sized Apartments

Hong Kong is one of my favorite cities in the world, and it's a wonderful place to visit as a TOURIST... but truth be told, it is a struggle to survive for many LOCAL people. In this eye-opening story, I document the lives of the lower class who are living in "coffin homes," that are smaller than any bedroom you've ever seen.

I'd love to hear from you in the comments below! What do you think about this bizarre living situation? And what could the Hong Kong government do about it?

I think the most shocking part of filming this story is the fact that these coffin home dwellers are spending $200-400 USD per month for rent.

It’s just a very sad situation for hundreds of thousands of local people in one of my favorite cities in the world 😌 The next time you go to Hong Kong and enjoy the 5-star amenities, don’t forget about these people!

My 2 bedroom rental now feels like a luxurious palace. Always be grateful for what you have.

The man sleeping without a mattress brought me to tears...When I moved to the flat I'm in right now, 4 years ago, I didn't have any money left after paying the down payment so I had to sleep on the floor for the first 2 weeks. I would use my winter jacket to soften the floor. I will never forget how miserable it felt and it was just for 2 weeks. This guys has been living like this for years. It's horrible. No one deserves to live in conditions like these.

I lived alone in a coffin home, also called cage home, for a short period of time when I was a young man struggling to survive in Hong Kong. The condition was brutal. It was literally a 4 feet by 7 feet cage with no window and no air-conditioning in the sweltering summer heat. But I never gave up hope. Now I'm living comfortably in a large apartment unit that I own in the USA.
For people who are down on their luck but still have strong hope for a better life, I wish them well. Let love be their guiding light in the dark chapter of their lives.

This is heartbreaking, nobody should have to live like this. It's amazing how some of these people are still so cheerful and upbeat, it really puts things into perspective. Always be grateful for the things you have. Yes are there are people who have more than you, but there are also those who have much less and would give anything to trade places with you!

Coco is an absolute gem of a human being. Honestly they always say those who have the least give the most. Honestly made me tear up a little how kind this lady is. ❤️

Absolutely LOVE Coco. She's just the sweetest. She wouldn't let you hold her bags for her because she's used to doing everything for herself, and she paid for you because she's a hospitable person.

I heard about these coffin homes and I just had to see a video about them. I'm glad it was this one. You were very kind, compassionate, and respectful. This is such a dramatically different way for people to live than most of us will ever know and it's difficult to imagine until you actually see it. I really hope for the best for all of these people, despite everything they keep doing their best.

Drew, thank you for bringing us Coco! What a sweet woman she is. She was so generous, even though she did not have much to share. She didn't flinch and bought you drinks. Amazing.

I love Coco’s generosity and hospitality! When Drew said “she’s so stubborn” I giggled. Lol. He just experienced an asian auntie’s attitude haha!

Coco is one of the amazing people out there, each moment she makes sure to show gratitude to whatever she has and makes sure the other person is feeling well inside. True to the word human being.

I'm never complaining about my living situation ever again. I own a home, have everything I need and have a good job, and still I'd find stuff to complain about.
This has truly opened my eyes.

I literally cried the entire time. I still remember growing up, eating rice with salt, soy sauce, or brown sugar just to add flavor to my meals. My parents were incredibly thoughtful, always doing their best to ensure that my brother and I received a good education. I’ve never been more grateful to them for believing that education could change my life.

Now, I have a good job that has allowed me to experience a comfortable life, with opportunities I never imagined possible. Watching this opened my eyes to the blessings I now currently have, ones I only used to pray for. Thank you for this video.

The translator and guide did such an amazing job. She had such a kind vibe/presence. And the “ waiting to die” comment from that older gentleman. Damn. That certainly gives me gratitude for the simple things in my life. Peace to that man. 😢
