2000s Critics Review F-Zero: GP Legend & F-Zero: Climax on Game Boy Advance (Nintendo Switch Online)

Get your engines revving, race fans, because Nintendo just announced two more F-Zero games are headed to the Nintendo Switch Online Expansion Pack on October 11th. That’s right, not only are we getting F-Zero: GP Legend, but Nintendo also plans on releasing F-Zero: Climax outside of Japan for the first time ever. That’s exciting news, but are either of these games worth playing? To answer that question, I decided to flip through the pages of Nintendo Power, GamePro, Edge and more classic magazines to see what the critics said back when these games first came out. I sure hope you have the need for speed, because that’s what you’re going to get in this week’s episode of Nintendo Switch Online Review Crew.

I will admit, I've only played the SNES F-Zero, but I am always when glad more previously region-locked games are available to a wide audience!

F-Zero GP Legend was the first F-Zero game I played, and I remember liking it a lot back in the day. I remember feeling like there was a lot of content, between the regular Grand Prix modes, and a story mode with 8 different characters, and a mission mode that I don't remember diving into that much. I am really excited to be able to go back and play it again on NSO!

GX for the Gamecube is my favorite, but I also admit I haven't actually played X or the GBA titles... so I don't know how much one should listen to my opinions on the games. I'm just glad we have almost every F-Zero game available on Switch now... almost.

Hopefully you're feeling better. Healing vibes to you. Well, looked in my GBA Folder, and saw that I have ROMs of both of these, even Climax in the Translation Folder, so I could check them out. In answer to your question however, I've not played any of them, so don't even have a default answer. They do look fun though.

I didn’t even know that these games existed. I remember I got the first F-Zero game made for the Game Boy Advance when it launched. I can’t remember the title. The Game Boy Advance was so hard to find I ended up with the translucent pink GBA! Good times 😂.

Honestly Climax could have been released as a DS launch title in the US, most early adopters likely wouldn't have noticed GP Legend releasing on the GBA so closely anyway.

F-Zero Climax is not just one of the best GBA games, but one of the best racing games ever on any system. If racing game can give adrenaline rush, then it is great game.

A PROPER new game? No no no. F-zero 99 may not have 3D graphics, but it’s as F-Zero as F-Zero gets. I love GX as much as the next fan, but 99 is extremely engaging, intense and addicting. It makes GX feel somewhat lacking.
