Trent Reznor's reaction to this cover says it all. After hearing it, Trent said something along the lines of "this isn't my song anymore, it belongs to Cash. It turns out that I wrote it for him and didn't ever know it"

His very sick wife, heard him playing downstairs and came down. She wasn't intended to be in the video. She died shortly after. He soon followed her. When he closed the piano, he never opened it again. His last song.

Nobody has ever crammed more regret, anguish, and pain into three and a half minutes.

Johnny Cash was a good person who battled personal demons and made some bad choices and the curse of being a good person is that you’re capable of regret.

It's tragic enough when it's a 30 something guy who fell into drugs singing it, but it really hits extra hard when it's an old man who's acknowledging he doesn't have much time left.

This was his Goodbye to the world, June had passed not long before. 6 month after this song he died and went home to be with June, Love. Love is the only thing you take with you. ❤

Johnny made this an entirely different song. From a song about addiction, to, a summing up of an entire lifetime's worth of regret, and, anguish. Combine that with Rick Rubin's brilliant production, and, you have the most heartfelt farewell of any musician, EVER.

What you listened to is a man's goodbye to the world.
He died not long after recording this.
When his wife died, Johnny knew his time was up because he didn't want to be here without her.
Absolutely heartbreaking and this song brings tears to my eyes everytime I hear it.
RIP "The man in black"
He's whole again.

Doesn't matter how many times I have heard him sing that, it always makes me cry.

If this song doesn't make you stop for a second and think about our own mortality and the hurt we've put on others, something is wrong. What an absolutely beautiful rendition.

The fact that so many people react the same way to this song actually gives me hope for the world. Tears are not a sign of weakness. They are a sign of humanity, empathy, and caring. Just what we need right now.

The last minute of the song. The piano is just relentless. Pounding out such emotion with the lyrics. You feel everything he is saying.

It’s like every piano key strike is hammering away at your heart, as if to say, “I did my best, I tried, I really really did. Was it good enough?”

The song is so powerful. Something I remember is his daughter said something along the lines of 'it sounds like you’re saying good bye' Johnny replied with 'I am'

I'm 74 years old and this is PAINFUL. Beautiful but God damn it hurts. I doubt there is a person my age that doesn't feel the pain of our lives in this song. We all fuck up, we all have hurt and been hurt, we all have so many regrets, that's the universality of Johnny's cover. I know every younger person listening hears his pain but in another 30 or 40 years you will literally feel his pain when you listen to this (and it WILL be around in 30 or 40 years). I loved Trent's version 30 years ago but it is Johnny's now.

Johnny Cash passed away 6 months after this song was released. The man made brilliant, amazing music right up until the end.

not often a cover surpasses the original version. but with this Cash took Reznors pain and anguish, and pushed it beyond into the point of despair. a hauntingly beautiful rendition of an already powerful song

71 years of life - Not 71 years of age...This man had seen life in many different aspects Then most of us..A poor man, A rich man, A superstar, A prisoner, A sinner, A holy man, A loner, A traveler...He worked most of his life to entertain And bring happiness Even when he himself was not happy Or sick And in need of love of home And family This video Whoever edited it Captured the song And Johnny's emotion behind it In all Johnny expresses his life The goods and bads We sob And sorrow understanding He has left us But really He shed his skin to spread his wings Regret is something you also left behind

it's always interesting to me that people begin this video all happy to get into it, and within 10 seconds the heaviness and severity of it starts showing on their faces
