The mental trick I used to remember X vs Y was: “X marks the spot.” As in, I want to climb high before I get to X. And the letter Y has 3 branches, like 3 hands of a clock, clock is all about time, so if I want to get up in faster time, I follow the Y.

Good video.  I'd just be a little careful using the term "Vx will allow me to clear my obstacle SOONER rather than LATER". 
Most people will assume SOONER = quicker, what you mean his that Vx will allow you to clear the obstacle in the shortest distance after leaving the ground.  Vy will actually clear the obstacle "sooner".
