Love a book centering around an elderly female character! All Passion Spent sounds wonderful, there's something especially nice about reading books where the character is facing an important turning-point in their lives, with the coming of spring. It reminds me of Enchanted April and the ladies freeing themselves from their everyday lives with the short reprieve in Italy.

Hi Britta. I hope you've been able to get some rest, and I also hope that your mom is improving. I love Sarah Waters' novels. Take care!

Thank you, Britta!🌷I’ve enjoyed All Passion Spent very much too. Another book dealing with second chances and fulfillment late in life is And the Birds Rained Down by Canadian author Jocelyne Saucier. Art and mental illness play a central role in it as well. For me it has one of the most memorable female characters ever! It was published in French about ten years ago (and then translated into many languages) and has won a bunch of prestigious prizes.

I just picked up the first Detective Linley book from the library (the font is HUGE!) so I'm finally going to find out what you and Heidi love so much. I'm looking forward to it.

I just finished The Paying Guests by Sarah Waters. I really liked it. I have a copy of Tipping the Velvet so will read that one next. Looking forward to your review.

I enjoyed All Passion Spent and felt it would have been so fresh at the time it was written.

Hi Britta, hope you're okay. I miss your videos, but real life comes first. Just wanted to let you know your absence does not go unnoticed. Wishing you all the best!

Deborah wrote her own memoir, “Wait For Me.” You can find her in two letter collections. “In Tearing Haste.” This is a collection of her correspondence with Patrick Leigh Fermor. Also you might like “Letters Between Six Sisters” which is a collection that features letters written by the Mitfords to each other. I think Charlotte Moseley edited both volumes. Nancy Mitford’s letters have also been collected as have Jessica’s. As you might expect, Nancy’s are filled with wit and Jessica’s are filled with politics.

Hi Britta, I'm not on all the social media, so I do it here. Just letting you know that I think of you and hoping you're okay under the circumstances. 🙋‍♀️

Britta, This is the only social media I use so I'm not sure if you posted somewhere else about your absence. I hope you are okay and will be back soon.

Leckie is on my TBR and I am definitely looking forward to taking on Translation State. After seeing comments about LeGuin’s lack of gender neutral terms in Left Hand of Darkness (by some youngster who didn’t live through the time) I was reminded of Marge Piercy’s experiment with alternative gender pronouns and so I’ve just started Woman On the Edge of Time.

Isn’t it funny how we get in cars, get on busses, trains, and ships. And especially interesting with spaceships, because one certainly can’t travel on a space ship, one can only travel IN a space ship. 😆
