Linear Phase EQ vs Natural Phase EQ | What's The Difference?

In this video I discuss the difference between Linear Phase EQ and Natural Phase EQ and what do listen for between the two.

I just got done doing a shoot out comparison with the new Logic Pro X Vintage EQ's and I noticed one of the major differences between those and the competition was how well the clarity of the signal remained after being processed.

There is a type of "smearing" that happens some processors which if duplicated over many tracks could become a problem.

Mixing is an art of subtly and it's these subtleties that might not make a huge statement in "solo" but over the course of a mix add up.

I would love to know your thoughts on the subject of linear phase eq and your experiences in the comments below!

“Mixing is a bunch of subtlties that add up to a big whole” so so true! whether its negligible or not its worth having subtle higher qualities when/if you can afford it :)

Hey, just a quick comment :)... I don't think "natural phase" is a real DSP term in filters or anything... It was more of a branding think that fab filter introduced to refer to a phase response that is comparable to an analog counterpart (hence the idea of it being natural hehe would have been funny if they called it organic XD)... The typical comparison is between linear-phase and minimum phase!. IMHO these two concepts are simply different properties of filters and not at all contrasting or opposite, but ironically that's what manufacturers end up telling us in any case.

P.d. the reason why FabFIlter created natural phase is because digital filters have very often slight differences when compared to analog filters. So in fact, most digital Eps out there, although they are based on analog designs, they have slight deviations (specially in the VHF) ;)
