“Tenerife” is a Spanish word and thus pronounced “teh·nr·ee·fay” I know the Brits don’t pronounce it like that, but that doesn’t make their pronunciation correct lol

All 248 on the KLM died due to an explosion when it hit the ground, and only 61 people on the Pan Am survived (including all 3 pilots on the aircraft). But 335 people on the Pan Am died, sadly meaning 583 people died with 61 survivors. Edit: Tysm for over 500 likes, never had this many before

I'm very glad you're doing this incident, truly one of the worst aviation accidents in aviation history. RIP to all the People on board. ❤

My great grandfather was on board the pan am. He just wanted to go in his holiday but it was the opposite. Rip 1948-1977

I could not imagine how terrifying it must have been to look out the window and see a plane heading straight for you

I remember watching this tragedy in a documentary as a kid many years ago, I was just reminded of how I'm getting older by seeing this video. My condolences to the ones lost in this horrific event. RIP

When first responders arrived on scene, they found the pan am 747 engulfed in flames and they saw an orange glow in the distance. They thought it was just debris from the pan am plane, but upon approaching it, they realized it was another 747

Fun fact: After the incident, the terrorists at the original airport said that they were sorry and didn’t want to cause that much damage

Every time this story is brought up it reminds me that even with sophisticated equipment, well trained and experienced pilots, small mistakes can line up and cause terrifying disasters...and then you reflect on that fact(not just aviation, just generally) to your own life, and you realize how lucky you are to even be alive

RIP to passengers and crew 🙏

Just saw the Air Crash Investigation episode and here's some details ;
The pilot of the KLM (the one taking off) was actually rushing to get out of there due to time constraints, but it turns out that for the last few months he's been training other pilots in a flight simulator, which doesn't have atc, which caused the poor communication.
Another thing, the PANAM was supposed to leave the runway early, but they missed their exit, probably because of the angle of the turn or poor visibility.
Next up, the ATC actually cleared the KLM to a beacon (basically a waypoint in the air) and the pilots interpreted that as a takeoff clearance. The pilot then started rolling the plane and the co-pilot informed the ATC that they were "at takeoff", which also got transmitted to the KLM, so they naturally said "we're still on the runway", but when they were saying that, the ATC controller also told KLM "Okay, standby for takeoff clearance" (he probably misheard the takeoff callout as "standing by for takeoff) and now the interesting thing is that when two people talked at once, the radio waves would get messed up, so the only thing that the KLM pilots heard was "Okay" from the atc.
hope this helped someone lol

Tenerife Airport Crash

Tenerife is a small airport, and lots of other planes, including the 747s were sent there while the situation on Gran Canaria (their original destination) was being taken care of.

Second, when they were given clearance to roll back from the gate, the KLM 747 had to refuel, which made the PanAm 747 wait almost 30 minutes for the plane to finish refueling.

Third, when they had instructed the PanAm plane to taxi out of the runway by exit 3, the pilots actually decided to exit through exit 4, since exit 3 had a very sharp turn which was very hard to make on a plane as big as a 747.

Finally, when the KLM pilots asked for clearance, the ATC had said something like "wait a few minutes and then we'll give you clearance, ok?" But because of comms issues, the KLM pilots only heard the "ok" from the ATC, so they assumed they had been cleared for takeoff, which essentially led to the tragedy... RIP to everyone who died there 🙏.

There was actually a mother and a kid on the plane, I hope they weren't part of the 583 deaths😢

I’ve heard a bunch of aviation stories, but this one still haunts me to this day after over 6 months, R.I.P to the passengers who died.
