The fake vanilla extract is the key ingredient. Nothing else works because the solutions are all water-based and do not address the oil. Imitation vanilla extract contains large amounts of food-safe emulsifier, which binds fats to water (whereas real vanilla extract would use alcohol emulsifiers and then let the spirits escape to leave only the vanilla flavor and water - time consuming!)

Citrus oil is great for removing oils and other hydrophobics: distilled and bottled they sell it as glass cleaner and Goo Gone. (Disclaimer: do not use Goo Gone or glass cleaner in your cooking.) But it is an oil. By simmering it with emulsifier, you're delivering it to the oil coating your kitchen walls, effectively scrubbing them with degreaser.

Good hack, checks out! For more lemon-grassy scents you could try some real, high quality orange extract... But for likely less than $5, this hack is king.

Been doing this for years, instead of just cinnamon, I use a couple of cider spice packs instead, inexpensive, and smell great, along with oranges, lemons and the vanilla!!! Been my go to for many, many years

I am going to try this! My next door neighbors, when they cook...My entire apt smells like their food.
Some times my kids, comes out of their rooms...And asked me if I'm cooking.

Great tip! We'll be doing a big fish fry on Friday being that it's Good Friday. The smell of oil and fish lingers for days and seeps into everything! I'm hoping this works. Thanks Dimitri. Happy Easter although I know Greek celebrate the week after. 😊
