How To Ride Safely On The Road | Ridesmart

Ridesmart is a series in partnership with British Cycling aimed at Sportive riders.

Effective communication and consideration will help keep you safe while out riding on open roads.

It's very rare that you will ride on closed roads, so learning how to ride with awareness of other road users is important. Keep yourself safe by giving yourself space while also offering consideration to other road users. Clear hands signals and calls will make people aware of your intentions.

Finally - don't jump red lights. It's not just illegal, it's dangerous!

"... be considerate to other road users, as each time you're riding on the road, you're representing cyclists, as a whole". Very true, and I wish this fact was universally accepted and followed by cyclists. The same should apply to drivers as well. Often times I see fights and quarrels being picked between cyclists and drivers and it usually stems from miscommunication of intent either when changing lanes, or making a turn. Being mutually respectful on the road can make the experience a lot more enjoyable for everyone.

Hardly seen any such 'shoulder check' This is a life saver you know! No point sticking arms out to the right then moving over then

I think that BMW station wagon is stalking the group.

I'm not sure, but I actually think it is better for traffic to overtake when you are cycling 2 abreast. The highway code states that you should give a cyclist as much room as you would a car, i.e. being fully on the other side of the road. When a group of 4 cyclists cycle 2 abreast this dramatically shortens the length of the group thus makes overtaking safer and easier.

A version of this video filmed on French roads would make it much more useful for your American viewers as well. I would love to share this with some of my groups, but I am afraid that it would confuse some of our more "confusable" riders who actually need it the most. Thanks for the great work.

Where i live if you ride on the road people will become mad and honk until you move out of the road and keep going on the dirt sidewalk

Good stuff. We can all do our part to stay safe - other road users have to do theirs too of course, and bad driving is too common, but all cyclists can work to stay safe.

you should make also "How to drive safely" video, because there are lot of idiot drivers on the road who do not respect cyclists

Can you do an upload on more advanced hand signals? I know a few, but I sometimes see riders using them on my commute to work but I don't always know what they mean. I'm sure I'm not the only one! :)

Point down at pot holes, wave your hand down for gravel or uneven surfaces and leave and open palm behind for slowing.

The last time I was in Britain I got to bike around a lot, and I must admit I do miss riding on the left side of the road. Such a fun new way to approach the world!

That said, keeping left back home is a bit of a suicide mission.
