Can Xdefiant challenge Call of Duty?

The project is being led by Mark Rubin who previously worked at Infinity Ward on the Call of Duty franchise from Modern Warfare to Infinite Warfare.

Xdefiant needs to just lean into the niche that CoD left behind. The 6v6 experience suffers on CoD for a host of reasons too long for a comment, and Xdefiant can provide that 6v6 casual/comp experience that people have been craving. Xdefiant could add a BR mode for sure, as the classes would make for an interesting BR, but it by no means needs one anytime soon. Xdefiant should take its time to master its play space, then add additional modes like BR and so on.

The only thing that will kill COD is it's self. If they can't keep the players happy they will find fun elsewhere

I played MWII2022 up till the end of season 1, got platinum on almost all weapons and polyatomic on a handful... ultimately I had fun, but not so invested on subsequent seasons, on top of that my back log is piling up XD... now from what I watched so far Xdefiant seems like a solid multiplayer PvP, kinda reminds me of CoD of old somehow... but since I've not played myself and is only in beta right now, I feel hard to assess how popular it could get... the powers and factions seem inspired on arena shooters, while gunfights themselves look very similar to CoD gun play as well speed... being honest what worries the most is: this being a free to play game and all, I wonder how much cheaters will be a problem... by contrast, MWII2022 even being paid and w/ substantial efforts put in anti-cheat still has a problem, for instance I almost never played the GroundWar (and the other high player count mode) cuz it forces crossplay... I know Xdefiant at least lets players turn off crossplay, also there's no SBMM both very appealing to me... but then again, multiplayer games live and die on players count... I'm really hopeful for a good competitor for CoD, even being a tall order, competition would likely force Activision and their studios to make a better CoD...

When people talk about cod I feel like one them movies where they say "we finally caught the bad guy" right before they get stab in the back not realizing it was 3 killers not 1 that was doing the crimes. Lono at least understand that part but does he understand the full weight of what would need to be done.

Issue is not can it dethrone COD but keep COD dethroned long enough to cap the genre. Can it keep up with player demand with 1 studio? Can it continue to change the game loop to change the feel season by season? Can it get the esports and streamers to back it? Can it make a solo campaign as cod has that as well? Can it fix the netcode that currently as bad as past ghost recon game? Are there going be other modes like zombies that important as well to compete with cod. If it can't it just another TF2 it will gain a following but won't dethrone the king.

I never played CoD but the "can *** challenge the reign of ***" talk reminds me so much of World of Warcraft. And yeah, the best way to challenge CoD is to fill the niches that CoD fails to appease. That and not be run by a horrible parent company like WoW has with Activ- right.

I know reload cancelling speeds up reloads, or it used to, wat does slide cancelling speed up?

COD hasn’t been dethroned in over a decade. It’s not going anywhere. Even at its weakest like last year, Halo and BF failed to do so and that was the best shot. XDefiant will have a base but it looks like a sweatfest since they’re asking pro players for advice. It needs a very good anti-cheat too.

I think this was the game where they tried to attach the Tom Clancy name to it and fans weren't having it

So if this is the end result I will very likely support it. To be honest with you Reforge, I personally believe that competition in the FPS genre will always boil down to competition for the sake of it as long as Call of Duty exists as an active franchise because no matter how good the next game is, people will always flock to Call of Duty. It was different when Halo was the top shooter because Halo was only on one platform. And multiplats could compete bc they could be popular elsewhere.
