How To Write The 'Perfect' Protagonist

[JJK MANGA SPOILERS AHEAD]

WHAT DOES IT MEAN TO BE A PROTAGONIST??? Some of my favorite characters of all time are "protagonist". They are the most important factor of any story, especially shonen stories. When analyzing my favorite protagonist, I've come across the concept of the Struggler Protagonist. The who struggles against everything in the story to uphold the narratives ethos. I wondered if I could find the perfect version of this type of character...and I think I found him. Let's talk about protagonist, shonen manga, jujutsu kaisen and Yuji Itadori...

Jujutsu Kaisen (呪術廻戦, rgh. "Sorcery Battle")[b] is a Japanese manga series written and illustrated by Gege Akutami. It has been serialized in Shueisha's shōnen manga magazine Weekly Shōnen Jump since March 2018, with its chapters collected and published in 25 tankōbon volumes as of January 2024. The story follows high school student Yuji Itadori as he joins a secret organization of Jujutsu Sorcerers to eliminate a powerful Curse named Ryomen Sukuna, of whom Yuji becomes the host. Jujutsu Kaisen is a sequel to Akutami's Tokyo Metropolitan Curse Technical School, serialized in Shueisha's Jump Giga from April to July 2017, later collected in a tankōbon volume, retroactively titled as Jujutsu Kaisen 0, in December 2018.

The show says it itself, “Yuji Itadori is the vessel of Sukuna, King of Curses and Poisons. As such Yuji has a resistance to all poisons. If it’s just physical pain, Yuji Itadori will never stop.”

Another thing I really like is how Yuji explains not wanting to kill in a way that doesn't feel cliché.

He says "I just think, if I killed anyone, the option of "killing" would force its way into my life. The value of life would become ambiguous. I wouldn't even understand the importance of those I care about anymore. And that scares me."

That's so much better of a reason than the typical "if we kill the bad guys we'll be just like them" that most merciful good characters give.

Chapter 262 of jjk REALLY played into the "loosing humanity" thing😭

I remember when I first read JJK and I really love Yuji for some reason.
As JJK becomes popular, I see people judge Yuji for being too boring, too weak, and I started to understand why I like Yuji.
Yuji isn't gifted, so people belittle him. Yuji is too kind, so people think his ideal is boring. However, just like what you said in the video, no matter how harsh the reality is, Yuji will never give up fighting, and he will never throw away his humanity.

One thing i admire about yuji is, even though he is in the middle of a battle he prayed for the lost souls that he couldn't save, that he couldn't help. He is the defition of a kind hearted being.

I think denji fits this mold too but he doesn’t really have a resolve and will to stick to moral principles against the world like yuji does, he’s just abused constantly and just wants to live happy

I feel like a lot of people forget that we’re introduced to yuji in the first episode with him casually breaking multiple Olympic world records for different sports as a high schooler on his first time ever trying them. I get that the other sorcerers and curses are ridiculously strong too but that really soured my taste for the character who didn’t really have an interesting personality beyond that in s1. Maybe the manga did it differently or people just forgot about that by the end of the episode but it always stuck with me that he was just a natural born captain America without any training and I rarely ever feared for him in the first season. I wish he was just a regular athletic dude instead because it made him seem like he was just another shonen chosen one or saiyan or something from episode one and that his grandpa was just hiding it from him even on his deathbed. If you want a true struggling protagonist I’m not sure who I’d pick in shonen but Spider-Man is the first character that comes to mind for me

Yuji’s connection to his humanity and his refusal to let it go makes me think even more so that the theory of his cursed technique being related to memories is correct. Rather than having a technique that can physically attack and hurt someone he would have a technique that can make someone rethink things and remind them of their humanity and how important it is.

“Yuji is not a cog in a machine, he’s a lone wrench thrown into it.” Couldn’t have said it better myself. Great video! Can’t wait to see what you’ve got in store

this is literally brilliantly done, Yuji is my most favourite character too and seeing you do him justice after so many people bash him for not being overpowered or holding onto his ideals is so refreshing. earned a sub, man. this is incredible.

"In the words of a great man"😢
Nanami for me embodied the anti-JJK ethos as much as yuji, after being burnt alive he could've walked back to shoko, that would've made more sense, but he had people to save so he kept walking towards danger.

I KNEW IT!! I knew Yuji is a special protagonist bc of his actions.

Yuji is one of the protagonist I can resonate with. What I mean by that is I understand his struggles and the pain he had to endure and still keep moving on and fighting back the evil. He is written close to some of us. He isn’t the strongest and not overpowered but this isn’t a reason to give up. He wasn’t able to save the people he cared and had after Nobara‘s death a mental breakdown. Todo came to rescue him as Yuji confirmed that he realized his convictions were actually excuses and felt some how vulnerable but Todo’s words could get through him and he found a reason to stand up and fight again. He needed the mental support.
His ideology of helping and saving others who are weak is similar to Geto. While Geto lost himself bc of a traumatic tragedy. Yuji is the one who won’t or doesn’t want to lose himself, his humanity, his altruistic demeanor. And I admire this a lot💜

Thanks for explaining what it means to be a real protagonist. And I am happy I found your channel keep up the good work💪🏼

Damn what a good video! Yuji is so so so relatable and is the main reason why i started to read jjk. It´s really crazy to see how some people can´t understand such a good character like him, his mentality that doens´t match with all the "hero thing" like other mangas mcs and his constant strugles to find a purpose or to understand who he really is. This is what moves me honestly.

I have loved Yuji from the very start of Jujutsu Kaisen. I didn't know why not that many people liked him, but it didn't bother me. I don't know why I liked him so much, but he is my top one favorite character in anime with Asta. I'm really glad you talked about this, I'm happy that someone else liked Yuji as much as I did, and I finally know why he is such a great and amazing character.

Sukuna represents selfishness, while Yuji represents generosity and selfless personality, the opposite. That makes him so uncomfortable

Jesus. I feel like you're the only person who actually understands JJK for what it is and the true message it conveys. This was a breath of fresh air.
