Phil Spencer: Microsoft 'absolutely' plans on releasing future console hardware | 8-Bit Eric

8-Bit Eric ( 8BE ) According to Xbox head Phil Spencer, Microsoft is still planning to release gaming hardware following the launch of the Xbox Series X and Xbox Series S, despite the games industry leaning more towards an all-digital, cloud-based future.

Speaking to Yahoo! Finance, Spencer confirmed that Microsoft is still planning on developing dedicated gaming hardware, at least in the short term, even though services like Xbox Cloud Gaming, Google Stadia, and Amazon Luna are changing the ways the world plays games.

I think they should stick to physical copies for the sake of people who don’t have internet. I have friends and family who come over to update games and system cause they can’t afford internet. And they still play the game without achievement hunting. As they can beat a game.

The thing with all cloud gamming is assuming that everyone has a fast enough reliable "Nvr Fail Connection" which isn't true at the moment. @ least with a console/Pc you can play purchased media offline.

When these consoles launch on Nov 10th I hope retailers will get some extra ones to sell to those of us who still want one and couldn't get a preorder but I still hope Microsoft will offer another preorder opportunity prior to launch ( fingers crossed) .

The next, next gen Xbox consoles would be sometime in the 2026-2027 time frame, as well as PS6.
Unless Microsoft does another round of MID-gen console hardware upgrades, maybe in 2024, and the top model could potentially be to counter a PS5 Pro.
As far as a *cloud streaming only* future, that is still a very long time away, won't happen before the 2030s.

I looove Gamepass but I really use it more as a rental to see if I want to buy a game or not. I’ll play all kinds of games on there and if one really sticks out to me, I’ll buy a physical copy if it’s available. I hope and pray physical games never go away. Prices will be a lot higher if we can’t buy second hand games lol

With the need for fast SSD for all future games, the next Series X or next Series S could be both disc drive free, with optional external non proprietary disc reader used on the next 2 or 3 machines down the line, saving on the price.

Cloud Gaming is not replacing anything anytime soon, because compression and latency is still an issue. Digital vs physical can change at a heart beat and honestly I could care less, so long as I knew my purchases are safe.
