The Life of Yogananda: The Story of the Yogi Who Became the First Modern Guru

--------------------- -------------------- -------------------- -------------------- -------------------- ---------------

In the heart of our spiritual exploration, we often encounter figures whose lives illuminate the path for us all. On today's episode, we welcome Philip Goldberg, a scholar, teacher, and author whose work delves deeply into the life and teachings of Paramahansa Yogananda. With a gentle touch, Goldberg paints a vivid portrait of Yogananda's journey from the banks of the Ganges to the bustling streets of Boston, bringing ancient wisdom to a new world.

Philip Goldberg shared that Yogananda's mission was not just a personal endeavor but a destiny foretold in his youth. His guru recognized the potential in the young Yogananda, preparing him for a monumental task: bringing Kriya Yoga to the West. Goldberg eloquently explains that Yogananda was destined to transform the spiritual landscape of America, a mission that required immense courage and unwavering dedication.

Yogananda's arrival in America in 1920 marked the beginning of a remarkable odyssey. As Goldberg recounts, the young swami arrived with little more than his spiritual fervor and the blessings of his lineage. Despite initial struggles, including cultural shock and racial prejudice, Yogananda's teachings began to resonate with a growing number of Americans. He moved from small gatherings in living rooms to filling symphony halls, his message of inner peace and universal love finding fertile ground in the West.

One of the most intriguing aspects of Yogananda's work, as highlighted by Goldberg, was his ability to bridge Eastern and Western spiritual traditions. Yogananda spoke extensively about Jesus Christ, presenting him as a figure akin to the great sages of India. This inclusive approach allowed many to reconnect with their spiritual roots, seeing Jesus through a new, esoteric lens. Goldberg notes that this was not merely a strategic move but a sincere reverence for all enlightened beings, fostering a deeper spiritual unity.

Please enjoy my conversation with Philip Goldberg.

George Harrison was a true Yogi. He achieved the rainbow light body as he transcended, witnessed by his wife
He was first opened by the experience of taking LSD
But he didn’t stop there.
He took all the teachings seriously, including the Tibetan book of the dead. He passed intentionally, as Yogananda did. He was brutally attacked by someone with a knife in his home and that signaled the end of his earthly journey. He planned and systematically carried out his leaving from that point on. And he succeeded
Like no other
I’d like to know if his body shrunk like the lamas’ do.
As impressive as Yogananda who’s body did not decompose for a long long time
His leaving was the most dramatic thing he did in his life I think. We are incredible beings here on this planet. We just need to know this. Please everybody read autobiography of a yogi. If you haven’t you are missing out. Frfr

Read this in my mid-30s and it made a huge impact. Got me into yoga, kept the mystery of life alive.. and definitely helped me wrestle with ego and maintain perspective. Because it's true: Levitate? So what. Feel chakra energy? So what. See auras? So what. All of those are nowhere near being an end goal. Fun and exciting and helpful, yes. But more like a window onto the mechanics of energy. They don’t extricate you from simply living your life, which is a wonderful thing. And in that, we are all equal. One no more than and no less than the other. One loved by the universe no more than and no less than the other.

What I find comforting is that the answers are coming. One day, we will pass from this beautiful life to the next, and we will know the truth about Jesus, and everything else. ♥️

Awesome interview, many thanks to you both. Around 1984 I was working in a small music recording studio in NYC and met one of George Harrison's friends who handed me a copy of Autobiography of a Yogi. At 21 yo, the book changed my life and I became a long distance student of SRF.
While visiting relatives in Laguna beach a year later, , I took a bus to LA, then another bus that dropped me close to SRF sanctuary at the bottom of a hill and walked up to SRF. When I walked onto the land it felt like home. I was able to talk with one of the nuns and I cried a river of happy tears. Yet when I left I knew that the monastery life was not for me. Also I realized that Yogananda was one of many teachers that came into my life and I'm so grateful for his presence and teachings, the gift he left us. Again thank you Alex, this podcast brought treasured memories for me of my early Spiritual Path and Yogananda was an integral part of my journey. 💖

Had Yogananda's book with me on a journey to the south if France. Next to my bed, put a petal of a rose on it, as a token of love. Guess what ??? The petal remained the same for days & days on it did not decay .. Thats how Far reaching He is, and goes. ✨ Also Alex, a great read is: Life and Teaching of the Masters of the far East by Baird T Spalding. Thanx for your intervieuws, great guests, its so alively and lighthearted. 🤩

In the 1990's a knew an elderly lady (British ) that grew up in India . Yogananda used to come to her house to talk to her father when she was a child . This was before he went to the west . She used to have telepathic communication with Yogananda . Interestingly she went to school in Darjeeling down the road from where my father went to school and her grand father was the engineer that built the railway up there . She also went to Tibet with the royal family of Nepal before foreigners were allowed to go there and before the writer of the book "Seven years in Tibet" who she knew .

Alex, you turned me to Yogananda. I was intrigued by your frequent references to him. I listened to the Autobiography of the Yogi at one go. He turned me to Ramana Maharshi which fast tracked me further into mysticism. Recently, Yogananda brought me back to himself again. I am moving more deeply into his teachings. Thanks, Alex.

Love Yogananda and Wayne Dyer...so Philip writing about Yogananda and "looking" like Wayne Dyer was so satisfying for me. Philip is gifted in his own right!
