I don’t understand how islands with no natural resources and limited industry lost to the most industrious and resource rich country in history… just don’t get it man

This video still gets it wrong, the vast majority of Japanese shipping sunk was done by US submarines based out of Pearl Harbor or Australia. The island hopping campaign was meant to liberate key areas for air bases which would help in interdiction and isolate Japanese outposts and garrisons causing a logistical and strategic drain on Japanese resources while utilizing the limited resources and manpower available to pacific commanders while the European front was made a priority to defeat Nazi Germany. Last but not least was to find airbases close enough to the Home Islands for staging bomber air raids which further destroyed Japanese infrastructure and industrial capacity for war.

It was submarines that sank most of those ships, based mostly out of Hawaii and later in Guam.

The allies, the British empire and her commonwealth played a huge roll as well…especially our navy, but we fought the Japanese in Singapore…

Yeah but without an atomic bomb, conquering mainland japan would have been an whole other ball game.

I mean Nimitz was pursuing the Island hopping campaign simultaneously with MacArthur pushing through Indonesia to take back the Philippines.

Oh and that was all while we were flying supply runs over the Himalayas and building a road through Burma to supply the Chinese resistance.

It really helped that the wartime American economy had the resources to put out a relentless amount of equipment and pull from a significant supply of manpower.

I'm pretty sure it was the two nuclear bombs.

You should read the book of Eugene sledge "the man and the old breed" about his experience in the pacific theater, there's also this TV show called "The Pacific" directly inspired from this book, it's a great show, it shows how brutal the war was against the japanese for the americans forces, also how they had to fight in harsh conditions with the tropical climate and jungle setting!

This isn’t nearly the full story… this is like a high school level take and a narrow one at that.

Industrial capacity, access to resources, a decade of Sino-Japanese war, air supremacy and strategic bombing, submarine warfare, the manhattan project, Russian invasion of Manchuria.

Dropping H bomb won the war. Invading an island nation would have been difficult. The US had less military personnel after fighting in Europe and also running out of weapons.
