Why Scientists are Breeding Baby Abalone in Captivity

Ocean acidification threatens many species, especially the endangered white abalone. More acidic waters make it harder for them to build and maintain their shells. Baby abalone are especially vulnerable. But white abalone can have a lot of genetic differences, and scientists hope they can find the key to their survival in this variation. Eventually, this genetic key could make its way into wild population when captive individuals are released, saving the white abalone from extinction.
