A comparison video between Unity's and Construct 3's game engine development environments!

I mention the strengths and weaknesses of each game engine:
What is the Unity Game Engine [1:10]
How to use Unity's Asset Store [3:30]
Problems with Unity [4:55]
What is the Construct 3 Game Engine [5:50]
Cons of Construct 3 [8:20]
Which is better: Unity or Construct 3? [9:49]

Don't forget to let me know what YOU think and feel about this topic! Do you think Unity is superior due to its 3D abilities? Does Construct 3's speed win out? As a teacher, I want to hear from you!

Hopefully this will save you some time and frustration as an indie developer. It's hard to find a comparison of these two game engines, so I wanted to share some of my experiences and how I ended up choosing my favorite.

I love construct 2 and 3. I've had full version of construct 2 for last 5 years. I can make a game super quick now.

There are really 2 different environments. I tried Unity, and although I had some .NET background I got overwhelmed quickly. On the other hand you can get things working in Construct in a couple of hours. If you want to make an HTML5 2D game you probably better off with Construct anyway, since Unity webgl is very heavy. On the other hand if you are very serious about indie games dev, you will probably have to switch to Unity at some point. However Construct learning curve is very short, so you won't waste much time starting from there.

Wish you would have touched on the subject of lighting. You can't do fancy lighting effects with C3 and that can be a problem depending on the type of game you want to make. I see you showcased Megasphere, these beautiful effects would be hard to fake in C3. Apart from that spot on, C3 is just amazing.

Thank you for this review. And for an engaged comment-section!

My situation: basic web programming knowledge, and looking to make my first and probably only 2d fighting game— just as a hobby. And will be released as freeware.

Is g3, unity or godot best for me?

I started with Unity many years ago, but it was way too big for my meager talent and ability at the time. I think I'd do better with it today, now that I've got more experience and "hard knocks" under my belt.

When I discovered html5 and webgl, I drifted away from Unity and entered a whole new world of game development that included Hippani (Hippo Animator), Construct 2 (now 3), Playcanvas and Babylonjs. Even though Construct 3 is "small" in comparison to Unity, I've found that it's also very flexible. Not only have I discovered ways to make it seem more 3D-ish, but I've leaned to use it in larger projects that involve streaming Vimeo video, Babylonjs 3D walkthroughs, Playcanvas scenes and other content embedded in iframes. In fact, the treasure hunt game I'm working on now uses Construct 3 as a central framework element that directs the player to all of the other content. What I like most of all is that the player doesn't have to download anything; it just all plays directly on the web pages.

As a game developer myself. Construct 3 is my choice. Its enabled me to make many tutorials on how to use it and I was even able to publish a game to Google play store with adverts within a few weeks of using it ❤👍

For now I am still sticking with Construct 2.
It does greatly the job and I can really work at high speed with it.

A point that was not mentioned is the price of C3 (I would compare it with C2's one too).

I've used Unity3d since 2011. I switched to Construct 3 because I primarily use my iPad for everything now.

I wanna make a 2d fighting game, packed with characters and heaps of smooth Animations. Would this be too much for C3 + Mobile devices?

You can't make a 1vs1 2D fighting game in Construct 3 and the previews always crash.

In conclusion: use Godot and keep your eye out for Clickteam Fusion 3!
