Mini stroke or transient ischemic attack. These are early warning signs that the patient is going to get a major stroke. What are these symptoms? We have a pneumonic for this, which is FAST. F is facial deviation, A is arm weakness, S is slurring of speech and T is please don’t waste time if you have these symptoms. What happens in these patients? There will be a blood clot which will go into the brain and the blood supply to the brain is cut off and then they get dissolved on its own. These are all minor strokes. So what are the source of these blood clots? There will be cholesterol deposition within the carotid arteries in the neck, which can lead to these clots which are going into the brain, which we have to treat. If you feel that you have these symptoms which are transient , then you immediately have to go to a doctor, which is a neurosurgeon or a neurologist to decide whether a carotid artery stenosis and of it is to be addressed with a stenting or whether you need a medication.
