Eren Jaeger from Attack on Titan has turned into one of the best protagonists in all of anime and manga, but how did this transition happen and at what cost?

Honestly, I’m really loving the thumbnail. Might drop another video about Guts just to use that style of thumbnail again😂😂

Armin: "To endure becoming a monster you have to discard your humanity."
Eren: *Does exactly that*
Armin: "Hol up-"

I like to think that Eren planned for Isayama's birth, so Isayama could write him.

The Eren we knew died when he kissed Historia's hand. In that moment he stopped being Eren Yeager and became the Attack Titan.

"Did you ever hear, the Tragedy of Eren Jaeger the Vengful?"
"No"
"I thought not. It's not something the Marleyans would tell you. It's an Eldian legend."

Honestly the fact that the fan base is so divided on who’s side everyone’s on just shows how complex Eren is as a character.

I feel like you've fundamentally misread what happened to Eren after he remembered the true history of the outside world through his father's memories. (Imagine, for example, seeing the 8yr old aunt that you never got a chance to meet get murdered simply for the crime of being an Eldian). In that moment of realization, Eren understood just how deep the hatred for Eldians runs in the lands beyond the sea. As he sees it, there is no route for peaceful coexistence between Eldians and non-Eldians. None of the other Eldians currently opposing his actions understand that; they haven't seen what he's seen.

I don't think he's being "fueled by anger, vengeance, and pure hatred" at all. If you need any proof of that, look at his reunion with Reiner in Marley. Reiner immediately assumes Eren is there to kill him, that he's only out revenge. But Eren tacitly forgives him, holding no grudges, and says that he finally understands that Reiner was only doing what he thought was right to save the world. If Eren didn't do all the reprehensible things he's doing now, there is a 100% guarantee that everyone he's ever loved would have already been massacred by the united forces under Willy Tybur.

Eren even goes to secretly live in Marley for a while, to see whether there was any other option. Again, he's not being fueled by anger, vengeance, or pure hatred like you said. These are not the actions of a man driven by hate. In fact, Eren waited only until Willy Tybur had officially declared war on Paradis before he launched his pre-emptive attack on Marley to cripple their leadership and military in one fell swoop. Everything he's doing is out of a sense of self-preservation, not for himself, but for the ones left behind once Ymir's Curse finally catches up with him.

I harken back to Levi's words about Eren in the forest:
He is a real monster and not because of his titan power. No matter how much force he's held down with, no matter how strong a cage he's placed in, no one will be able to make his spirit submit to their will.
Foreshadowing at it's finest.

Eren: "Reiner, I've seen what the path you went down has done to you. You're filled with guilt and regret, you have lost the will to live. Don't worry, I won't follow in your footsteps."
Reiner: "That's good to hear.'
Eren: "When I murder thousands of people, I'll make sure I won't regret it in the slightest!"
Reiner: "Wait, what?"

Eren will go down as one of the greatest characters in all of manga/anime. Very few have had the development he has undergone and AoT as a whole should be studied on how to construct a narrative that subverts expectations CORRECTLY.

Eren is reminding me of erwin a little bit because they're willing to push forward by climbing through corpses .

"He understands he cannot control what happens to him, all he can control is how he reacts to it" Definitely something I'll keep in my mind

Eren basically had the griffith treatment done to him. Which I think very much separates him from lot of protagonist as it places conflict of wanting to see him succeed while also deeply questioning his motives to his goals.

Everyone: Eren is a character that I went from absolutely dislike to my favourite

Me: I liked him since the beginning MAN. Even now he is still the same aggressive and driven person I love in the beginning.

Never had any issues with him from the beginning. It’s a story...figured there’d be a shit ton of room for development.
