The Black Legend, Native Americans, and Spaniards: Crash Course US History #1

In which John Green kicks off Crash Course US History! Why, you may ask, are we covering US History, and not more World History, or the history of some other country, or the very specific history of your home region? Well, the reasons are many. But, like it or not, the United States has probably meddled in your country to some degree in the last 236 years or so, and that means US History is relevant all over the world. In episode 1, John talks about the Native Americans who lived in what is now the US prior to European contact. This is a history class, not archaeology, so we're mainly going to cover written history. That means we start with the first sustained European settlement in North America, and that means the Spanish. The Spanish have a long history with the natives of the Americas, and not all of it was positive. The Spanish were definitely not peaceful colonizers, but what colonizers are peaceful? Colonization pretty much always results in an antagonistic relationship with the locals. John teaches you about early Spanish explorers, settlements, and what happened when they didn't get along with the indigenous people. The story of their rocky relations has been called the Black Legend. Which is not a positive legend.

For the AP kids out there - Pro tip: look up the period yall are in on youtube, there are A LOT of teachers who make videos on them specifically for AP students. I took APUSH in high school. Crash Course is good if you want to remember a few facts and general information (it is a crash course).

Crash Course helped me pass the A.P. World History exam last year. I'm hoping that it can help me in A.P.U.S.H. this year.

As a Native American we did have some metal like copper and we did have domesticated animals. Some of us also had a writing system but in symbols telling a story, similar to runes.

When the AP Test is tomorrow and you try to binge watch all 47 crash course episodes, but you realize that's 8 hours worth of history and ultimately give up and cry in a corner instead of studying.

I don’t think it’s fair to compare the Spaniards to the Brits. The Catholic Spanish policy was convert and integrate. That’s why Latin America is brown skinned and speaks Spanish today. Intermarriage was common. Consider Cortez and la Malinche. Mestizos were born almost immediately. While the British Protestants policy eventually led to “manifest destiny “. Which meant keep pushing the brown people west and eliminate them if necessary. Both saw the indigenous populations as in the darkness of paganism but only the Catholics considered them persons as in need of redemption.

I think that when talking about the colonization of Spaniards it is worthy to mention that at that time the Catholic Kings recognized Indians as their subjects and as souls for God. The Queen Isabel prohibited the slavery of Indians in the colonies and order the protection of their rights of property. With Fernando II, Indians are recognized as free men. And with Carlos V it is recognized the freedom of conscience of Indians who must not be converted to Catholicism by force. Therefore, a quite progressive idea for that time (we are talking about recognizing Indians as human beings deserving respect and rights) was defended from the political “spaniard” elite. That doesn’t mean Spaniard there behave accordingly.
