Other people may cringe at this, but this is still my favorite of all the movies! The special effects were not up to spec (like the Enterprise throughout this movie), but when you have to use a side-line company because the a-team were working to get Indiana Jones whipping things up, well...it's still my fav! Thanks for showing!

I know ILM weren't available, but how is it that these shots are worse even than what TNG's special effects team were doing on a fraction of the budget at the same time? Hell, those shots of the Enterprise during the shuttle sequence (from about 2:30 onwards) would be barely passable even in an episode of TOS!

I had forgotten about how the old NASA satellite "screams" when its shot by the Klingons.

Everything in this movie, except for the scene with Sybok and Kirk/Spock/McCoy reliving their past, was absolutely dreadful.

The Enterprise is a brilliant, beautiful ship.

Bad matting, no motion blur, and some of the moving ships appear to be just a still (as with the shuttlecraft at 2:28). Even on a limited budget, even with little time, even with 1989 special effects, there should be more than just the one good composite shot at 4:46.

I hope those responsible were made to sit in a corner and think about what they did for a month.

At 4.36 when the klingon ships fires disruptors some of it sound like a star wars tie fighters weapons.

I really hope that TFF gets an SFX update at some point.

Time has not been kind to the special effects, but the whole problem was that we'd seen high quality effects in the first film and very good effects for the smaller budgets of parts II and III, as well as a wide variety of effects work in part IV (the whales are great minitature work).  So even back in 1989, the ST V: TFF special effects were extremely poor to completely unacceptable.

This came out in the big Summer of ‘89 film slate. People must’ve been stoked for this, coming off a strong trilogy of II-IV and the big box office of The Voyage Home. What a letdown it must’ve felt like afterward. Not that the series had much life left, considering the age of the cast and the desire to move forward with TNG but this sort of killed the momentum dead in its tracks.
