The only downside to solid dabbing is lack of air flow. Which in damp conditions can cause black mould to form.
Like yourself Lee I always use the very same method.
Not just for fire and air testing Principles. I feel it makes it easier to straighten the ceiling and skirting line. Which is what the eye sees first. If it looks flat then 9 times out of ten it is.

Be cheaper (probably easier too) to juat float the walls.

My walls were not done this way, and we have problems with cold air circulating behind the plasterboard. In one partiularly cold room, we're effectively living in a plaster-board tent, with air whistling around behind he back of the boards and inside the insulated walls!
