Introduction to derivatives for calculus-based physics

The derivative concept is introduced and briefly explained. Selected important results are presented: (1) derivative of a constant is zero, (2) multiplicative constants “slide through” derivative operators, (3) short-cut rule for derivatives of functions that are powers of the independent variable. 2 and 3 are presented without proof. Three examples (using results 2 and 3) are done. The last of those examples is used to “spot check” result 3 (the original function is plotted, and the derivative is shown, graphically, to correspond to the slope at three specific points).
