Illegal street racers try to outrun police helicopter 🚁

During the pandemic of 2020, the usually heavily traveled highways around Toronto were suddenly mostly deserted as stay-at-home orders kept many people off the roads. Some took that as their call to the open roads and police north of the city were flooded with calls over street racing.
The organized but unsanctioned drag races — that are run exactly like they were in the movie Grease depicting the 1950s. One thing John Travolta and his buddies in the T-Birds, his group of leather jacket-wearing greasers, didn’t have to contend with was police helicopters with infrared, thermal imaging and night vision cameras. Here is footage from York Regional Police helicopter Air2 during Operation Dragnet, a project aimed at curtailing organized drag races in the city of Vaughan, started in July and ending in August.

You know how much money they spent between all those cops & the cost of that fuel in the helicopter just to get a couple racers! 😜 #Ridiculous #Speedon

186 miles per hour! The only time I've travel that fast was when an airplane I was in was either taking off or Landing. That. Is. Fast!

I hope the arrests were worth the $$$ it cost to run the chopper for the evening.

Crazy how it can pick up the bikes so well. Is engaging in street racing an indictable offence in Canada?

I've outrun a police helicopter on my GSXR1000, you CAN outrun them if you are fast enough, but you HAVE to know they are there and where you are headed.

It's all fun and games until someone is killed during these street races. I know a guy who hit a pedestrian in brampton and almost killed him. Good kid but fked up his life over a thrill that can be done legally on a track smh.

They can’t catch us in OC/LA when we have car meets

Had they keep catching some of these guys. The cops really need pop-up permanent spike strips on all highways that they can just trigger on command. Tired of these punk children and man-boys.

Those hot tires and exhaust light up light neon. That's pretty cool to see.

Dangerous freedom or peaceful slavery, your choice. This is a display of extreme overreaction on the police side. Go to a few car meets and see that it can be more dangerous when the cops show up. Everyone scatters and panics vs. chill for an hour and drag race. If you crash it’s your fault. -615 streets

There were obviously no hockey games on that night, 🤣 at least the Leafs weren't playing (because they got knocked out - again).
