"Prophets" Muhammad and Joseph Smith both give "Divine" proclamations that conveniently benefit their own sinful passions, for example.

You corrected yourself and said "to repent". I think this is crucial. If one repents, he or she will automatically seek communion, thus coming back to the Church.

This is exactly why ultra-trad movements which prioritize traditional liturgy at the expense of ex-communication worry me so much.

a true prophet points people to Jesus, and glorifies Jesus. "Behold the lamb of
God..."

"Wanting to start your own church, " may be a red flag, specially when it's built on the wanting part. Yet, nobody wants to compromise truth. Should one compromise truth for the sake unity?

Who cites the ancient sources? I do. But also about the starting your own church, that is exactly what all the self help people are trying to do. Everyday.

Where did John the Baptist get his authority from?

Yes, the idea of authority needs some more explanation. Is it possible for existing church authority go astray? Lets take extreme example - what if my church pastor or priest is pedofile? How can I ever listen to his sermons or honor him as my spiritual superior? Isn't me still following him a way of approving his actions?

I think one thing I would like to mention is Luther did not want to start his own church he was cast out from the Catholic Church because he believed in Grace lone (much like Hus) and called out the corruption (which never stopped). He was left in a vulnerable position. If you go to a Lutheran Liturgy the structure that was kept and the traditions that were kept were everything but the modern corruption in the Catholic Church at that time . All this to say I don’t think his intention was to be a leader of his church. His original goal was for the Catholic leadership to see where they fell and repent. But he did not disagree with many of the church traditions which is why he fell out with other reformers especially on issues such a communion, baptism and etc.

2:08 Funny enough Jbp started his own church although he is not actively promoting it or even accepting any members (as far as I know)

can't start your own church???? anyone can gather people together wherever with whomever and whenever they like.
no one needs to be in "authority". that presumed authority is the problem. Christ is Head. He has all authority.
fix your eyes on Him, and build each other up in the truth. a body of Christ is a church. gifts will be manifested. rejoice.

Does this make Protestantism a cult? In many ways, I can see that — speaking as a Protestant who’s served in the church for 18 years.

A cult of personality is definitely one of them.

A cult of grandiosity is the other.

And a cult of shallow theology for sure.

Hard pill to swallow on Martin Luther. Still... had he not started over, they prolly woulda killed him the way they killed Jan Hus.

This was an interesting watch from the perspective of a LDS, mormon. Joseph Smith would have enthusiastically agreed with the statement about not being your own authority. And insisted he was given authority by Peter, James, and John. As the apostolic authority was lost after the apostolic age.

Sorry Jonathan, your comments on Luther are simply not correct. I guess we’re just supposed to accept Rome’s errors for the sake of unity? 😳

christians are free to meet anywhere, in Jesus name. that is the church. don't need
a bishop. the word of God has the authority, and where the Spirit of the Lord is,
there is liberty. God himself places people in His church, as he pleases. and they all
should recognize and exercise their various gifts. to start a home fellowship, for
bible study, prayer, and song is a good thing, where Christ is head.
