This was a 2 man masterpiece. Both players on-the-spot decision making skills were on full display.

The realization that the ball wasnt coming out of the glove was instant, the decision by the pitcher to remove and throw his glove was instant, the decision of the first baseman to remove his glove to facilitate the catch was instant, and both the throw and catch were executed perfectly. Beautiful

Certainly one of the smart plays which we've seen over the years. I saw it on the news when it happened. My candidate for smartest play would be Willie Mays catching a deep fly ball in centerfield over his shoulder, his back to the infield in game 1 of the 1954 World Series. So spectacular that it's just referred to as "The Catch:"
