I always try to go for the turret first when I have a side shot specifically for this reason. KV1 side armor is really buggy thanks to volumetric.

This is a pretty consistent issue across a lot of vehicles, the flat plate above the tracks on a lot of vehicles is pretty thin, but because it's basically always perpendicular to the trajectory of the shot, the game acts like that plate has infinite compressive strength because the game doesn't model armour buckling, and therefore the shot fails to penetrate the width of the plate.

German side skirts are a gamble, it's because of the confidence we get from killing pz 3 and 4 with side skirts that we internalize side means kill, but volumetric makes it difficult to predict when the round pens the tank

Yea I had this happened to me with the IS2 using ap on a tiger1H sideskirt about a week ago I'm still trying to figure out how the ballistics calculatior screwed that up.

Meanwhile in my game: I hit a german tank and it goes through without spalling or anything. Straight in, straight out, no damage at all.
Enemy fires back with APHE hitting the outmost part of my tracks. She shell explodes and the "molten steel" burns from left to right diagonally through the tracks, through my sidearmor and through all compartments of the tank causing a crew knockout. Tank was a japanese STB-1. GG Gaijin.
