Fuel injection is the introduction of fuel in an internal combustion engine, most commonly automotive engines, by the means of an injector. This article focuses on fuel injection in reciprocating piston and Wankel rotary engines.
All compression-ignition engines (e.g. diesel engines), and many spark-ignition engines (i.e. petrol engines, such as Otto or Wankel), use fuel injection of one kind or another. Mass-produced diesel engines for passenger cars became available in the late 1930s and early 1940s, being the first fuel injected engines for passenger car use.
Port fuel injection :
Port fuel injection has been around since the 1980s and means that fuel is delivered to the engine directly into the intake manifold or cylinder head. Fuel is sprayed on the valve, which then uses the heat from the valve to further atomize the fuel.
Direct fuel injection :
Direct fuel injection is a fuel delivery system for internal combustion engines i.e. petrol and diesel. This technology enables the engines utilize fuel more efficiently that leads to more power, better fuel economy and lower emissions. It further improves vehicle's performance and reduces maintenance cost.
Dual fuel injection :
A dual injection system is a newly developed system that tries to combine both port and direct injection into a new single setup with a lot of benefits and fewer drawbacks.
