I like how he says “Normally this is where I would make a bunch of bad jokes, but we don’t have time for that.” yet he lists the bad jokes he would make…genius play.

Bruh, all you gotta do is go into settings and turn off Wi-Fi. Everyone can do it even my uncle bob.

The real question is... do they still need to do the "I'm not a robot" verification?

When I was a kid my friend told me her dad had a “key to the internet” and I was like ok sure. Turns out she was absolutely right and her dad was one of these 7 key holders at one point. Wild….

In the future, there'll be a movie about a modern version of Thanos who goes around the world collecting 7 keys to turn off the internet at the snap of his fingers.

As a Network Engineer, this video explained the concepts of DNS and DNSSEC particularly well. Nice job!
Also..I had friends..they're just from a different school...you wouldn't know them! :(

“Why’d you shut down the DNS system?”
Cause ICANN

Shutting off DNS doesn't turn off the Internet. It just turns off the directory where a name is looked up to find its IP address. Anyone at all can maintain their own copy of the DNS entries they use on a daily basis, so they'd be unaffected by the main DNS going away.

Source: I manage a corporate DNS with over 10, 000 entries. It can go out to the main DNS if necessary, but internal operations are unaffected by completely cutting off the outside world.

The servers containing the "keys" would need to be surrounded by a building which is usually built with bricks, which is pretty interesting and would require a video of its own

I feel bad for any new viewers who don’t know about the bricks and just click off.

This video is kinda false. They don’t “hold the keys to the internet” they hold the keys to root name DNS and DNSSEC so if they were to shut it down yes it would be a great pain to have to type in IP adresses instead of names the internet wouldn’t mysteriously vanish all of a sudden

Root hints servers usually have a 72 hour time to live on their DNS records, so it would take 3 days to “shut down” the internet - and that’s only for the DNSSEC requests - UDP requests will be unaffected.

This procedure is only to re-key the DNSSEC entries on the root hints servers, and would only be needed if the current keys were compromised or the existing certificates were about to expire. If they were compromised - you’d have to figure out how first before there would be any point in re-keying those servers.

This procedure would likely only be used once every ten years to generate new trusted certificates for the root hints servers.
