I watched the show "dawn of humanity" or something like that on PBS a couple of days ago, and it documented the actual excavation of Homo Naledi in Rising Star.

What was most interesting was that the researchers hinted at the notion that the bones at Rising Star indicated a burial grounds of sorts, meaning that our early human ancestors (with brains not significantly larger than other animals at the time) may have developed complex social behaviors early on.

Of course, the researchers did not "claim" this without evidence, but they enthusiastically speculated around this idea due to the circumstances of the cave and the sheer amount of bones there

If indeed it turns out to be true, then we would have to re-consider our theory of mind, and understand the transition between beast and human.

We would continue to scrutinize the potential abilities of animal minds and the definition of what determines our humanity, a very fierce and controversial philosophical debate. I hope this becomes the case

I've always wondered where the line rests between determining whether a specimen is an example of a new species or whether it's just an example of an known species with a noticeably varied morphology. If they unearthed the bones of every human living today, would they all be determined to be one species or would people with diseases, deformities, different heights and distinctly different facial bone structures be thought of as transitional models or offshoots?

They probably used that cave as an housing and the fact that they were deep into it might have had something to do with protection either from the elements or enemies/predators. Just laymen's speculation :)
