I once emailed Gaben, asking if it was true he was answering fan emails. He replied, “no.”

"Linus is an ass and we won't be working with him again" GabeN probably

I'd never seen Valve as a game-dev, more a "really good publisher".
You make something interesting - they don't give you a loan to finish it and then take a cut. They just offer you a job with them.
The reason their games are great, is because they're released when everybody working for Valve decides they're great. If they're not great, they just don't get released and Gabe just loses some imaginary money out of his vast stack of imaginary money.
I think a lot of the love Valve gets is because Valve's never tried to screw their customers. Steam Machines and the Steam controller didn't pan out - but I don't think anybody ever suggested Valve shipped them to make a quick buck.

Welcome to Team Fortress 2. After 9 years in development, hopefully it has been worth the weight.

They probably called it a hard drive so less knowledgeable people would know what they meant. My grandparents see any type of data storage as a hard drive and don’t really understand the difference when I explain it

Gabe gave me some good advice when I emailed him. Doesn’t seem like a bad guy.

I love the perfect legal defence you gave us there, "I don't own a single pirated game". Correct, that's the whole point.

Valve developed Half-Life 2, so they did in fact make their best game.

I'm calling it now: there will be no Steam Deck 3.

ChrisFix could use a storage server solution for his footage from all of his car maintenance, upgrade and repair videos. He has such a signature video style you could even adopt for the collab and he could share his opinion on the screwdriver from a car persons point of view

Pirating games now imo has been more a result of people waking up to the misery that is DRM, you dont own your games anymore the legal way so people will find a way to get around that.

I emailed Gabe once asking about his machining hobby he mentioned in an interview. He actually responded and told me all about it. It was pretty cool.

Beatsaber is actually the one game I'm considering pirating. I bought it fair and square, put 500 hours into it, and I'm getting so tired of not being able to stop it updating. A cracked version won't autoupdate which is the one thing I want.

Regarding auto-updates: Many publishers with community modded games, like Kerbal Space Progam and Project Zomboid, solve this on Steam using release channels ("Betas" tab in the game settings within the Library).
But it can still make you very dependent on what is offered by the publisher, so it would absolutely be great if Steam offered a version selector & rollback system by default.

The only grudge I have with Valve is their complete disregard to license ownership by moving to "Subscription" model for all Games.
(see the name of the Agreement when you buy any game, it's "Steam Subscriber Agreement")

Portal WAS made by valve, if I remember correctly the concept was made by a student, and when they saw it they just hired him as it was that good.
Seems like a good way to do it imo, better than just stealing the idea and profit from it!

You guys did really well on Project Farms review of the new screwdriver.

I'm not too sure about the good guy valve thing. They've continously ghosted the modding community after telling them to stop, and not allowing resolution: see tf2 classic and open fortress.

Hopefully they finally fix input method support in desktop Steam for Linux. We Steam Linux users have been bugging them to support IBus since 2013.

Every time I see media praising valve's openness I remember the fact that the Australian consumer protection agency had to sue them to get them to offer refunds here.

Remember that even if a company does the right thing they are not your friend. They will not always do the right thing. They will look out for themselves and not you.
