Mario Galaxy 2 Deserved Better

Mario Galaxy was a revolutionary game. It had an innovative new gameplay style, with weird gravity mechanics that led to some wacky level ideas. It set the gold standard for music with a grand, fully orchestrated soundtrack. And it had this weird feeling of tranquil.. emptiness.

Mario Galaxy 2 built upon this even further, by refining the gameplay, introducing new characters and inventing new ways to play. It was one of the few times that a sequel was better than the original, and is arguably one of the greatest games of all time. Yet… it’s been forgotten. Nintendo themselves never mention Galaxy 2, nor do they celebrate its success.

2020 was the 35th anniversary of the super mario franchise, and to celebrate, Nintendo decided to create a compilation of every mainline 3D Mario game. Mario 64, super Mario sunshine, Mario galaxy, Mario galaxy 2-

Nope.

Why?

You’d think that they'd add it as DLC later down the line but.. That never happened.

Maybe they’ll sell it separately on the switch?

Nope.

Today, I want to give this game the recognition it truly deserves.

Linearity keeps things straightforward and to the point, which means I’m constantly aware of what to do next.

Constantly being put into all these new cool and wacky situations.

I’ll admit the lack of story is a sad development choice, but it’s inarguably better in the gameplay department.

I played Galaxy and Galaxy 2 when they released and I felt a little disappointed with Galaxy. It wasn't a bad game at all, the levels design was good, the graphics looked amazing, great soundtrack and controls… but I felt it lacked something. And I didn't knew what it was until Galaxy 2 was released. That blew my mind, it was so damn good on every level and improved on every single thing from the previous game. One of my favorite games ever and by far my favorite Marios (along SM64).

Galaxy 2 is my favorite game of all time. I remember praying that we would eventually get it remastered on the Switch sometime after 3D All Stars and we never did. For some reason around this time and ever since, Nintendo has seemingly been neglecting this game and I could never understand as to why. I appreciate seeing a video talking about not just this issue but just talking about how great this game truly was. Hopefully with Mario's 40th anniversary next year, maybe we finally get it.

I *do* prefer the wonder, mystery, and music behind the Comet Observatory, but Starship Mario is pretty brilliant too, especially with how many secrets and interactive elements there are hidden about! My favorite thing to do was use the Cloud Flower to spin-ground pound into a luma and launch myself into orbit around the entire faceship.

Galaxy 2 is such a well-designed and refined experience. I would go back to replay certain levels numerous times, like Hightail Falls, the slide levels, or that beach with the hovering lily pads just for the thrill of it. Amazing game. Great video.

Super Mario Galaxy 2 has a very special place in my heart.
I played the whole game in summer 2010.
I played it along with my ex-best friend.
We spent the whole month of July and August playing together every afternoon.
He would come to my place to play for 1h or so and then we went together to the swimming pool.
We were 14, very young.

It's been more than 10 years now since we stopped speaking to each other.
I guess we couldn't manage our emotions as teenagers.

Anyway, every time I replay this videogame or watch any video related to it, I get very emotional and it increases my willingness of replaying the game.
Its design is wonderful.
I would say its levels are the most original ones I've ever seen in a Mario game.
Pure magic.

SMG2 has been my favorite 3d Mario game ever since I played it. Nothing really beat it. I remember seeing the ads on TV a year after I got my wii. Seeing Mario and Yoshi flying around during space did something to my brain. I have beat it several times, and only 100% beat it this year. I was bored, and decided to do some of the harder levels (purple coins on rainbow road, getting the comet medals in the fluzzard levels, etc), and it has always been so INSANE and sad to me how so much from it just. does not get acknowledged.

The most acknowledgement we got was in MINECRAFT (gobblegut and megahammer are in it), a single level in MK8 DLC (dragon driftway). Plus some of the cups in the MK8DX DLC. Lubba has only been cameo'd in like. Rosalina's move in a sports game. But outside of those minor things, , , none of its come back. The whittles were in ONE GAME. AND ITS MARIO PARTY 9. I always put Lubba in my dream rosters for Mario Kart Whatever the next one is, cause I think it would be fun to give SMG2 some rep! Or like. Maybe just reference the music more? They always reference Good Egg and Gusty Garden, but what about Sky Station and Fluffy Bluff/Cloudy Court. This game was like. INTEGRAL to my childhood, I played it BEFORE the original SMG, and while I love SMG, SMG2 makes me like. So. Happy. I have actually cried hearing fluffy bluff's music start up while replaying it in my adulthood. It has never been matched. I pray for a remake or remaster some day. I would love to play it again on the go, , , instead of replaying SMG over and over again on my switch. Cause ya that one is fun, but its the only game in 3d All Stars I like. Care about. 64 pisses me off, sunshine is. ok i love its vibe but i cannot play it. Galaxy is the only one i like playing and that i'm good at, , , but id have loved to see smg2, , ,

Galaxy 2 was my first 3D Mario game so I am biased to it. Always thought it was weird how overhyped Galaxy 1 was in comparison with 2 better graphics and arguably better power ups.

When I was a kid, I actually watched on YouTube Let's plays of Galaxy 2 first, instead of 1. I think both games are amazing, just slightly different. People shouldn't argue which game is better.

As a child, i only played Galaxy 2 as well. The only time i got to play Galaxy 1 was borrowing it from the library's game selection. The only thing i fondly remember of Galaxy 1 was flying around with the red star powerup. Galaxy 2 left a mark on me way more, and i still think back about it even though its been a decade since i last played. Glad someone at least made a statement about it and how we must continue the celebration of this amazing game even though Nintendo would rather forget about it. P.s. it is about a month until this game released 15 years ago, makes me feel so old.
