I'm not a big Emmerich fan, so I'll likely pass, but I'm glad you enjoyed it! I like Independence Day and LOVE The Patriot starring Mel Gibson, but everything else... not so much.

Great master review of this courageous battle. It was great too see the Big E back in action, even though as cg.
One of the things that this feature did better than the 70's counterpart, was not steal from other productions.
This film was also far better than 'Dauntless The Battle Of Midway', that was a lower budget film made the same year as this film.
Take care, and all the best.

Just got out of the film! I actually enjoyed it. It’s not great. But it had good visuals and there seemed to be a lot of veterans in the theater cheering moments.

But I’m with you, there was a character and emotional disconnect. It felt like watching a history textbook unfold live.

Twice you praise the sound design of this film. I have to disagree with you. I thought the sound mix was crap. This kind of film depends on the sound effects to sell the realism of the Computer graphic images. When we see a SBD Dauntless on screen (an aircraft that no longer exists practically and must be re-created either with a large scale mock up or in a computer) It needs to have a presence on screen for us to buy in that it is there. The sound effects sell it to us. The overpowering sound of its engine, the machine guns, the harrowing sound of wind blowing past as it dives on its target... Unfortunately Emmerich's team made the aesthetic decision to mix the music and dialogue louder than the sound effects in many of the battle scenes. Instead of the visceral Oooph of a ship exploding we get the effect of Harald Kloser's beautiful score. Is it a coincidence that Kloser is one of the film's producers and that his work is showcased so much?

That said I saw the movie for the second time today and really like it over all. I love history and I've read several books on the Midway battle over the years and appreciated how closely Emmerich and his screen writer adhered to the historical facts.
