Getting Started on Mastodon

Are you trying out Mastodon or the Fediverse for the first time? Not sure where to begin? Here's some quick advice from a long-time user and admin.

Hello 😊 I'm confused. I wanted to create an acc there a few minutes ago. I clicked on something like "create account" (it was grey-ish. First I thought I could not click on it at all) and NOT on "Download app", because I want to use it on my laptop and I don't need a programm for using a website. But then there where just a small number of servers and I could not find the normal MastodonDotSocial one I wanted to join on the list for the european ones. Now I would like to know: What the heck? Did I do something wrong? Do I really need to download a programm first for using the "twitter alternative"?

This is such a convoluted and non intuitive platform to sign up with, I'm guessing it will deter a large number of people to just say...fuck it

I like the advanced mode, but I would like to choose to remove vertical windows. For example, I would use notifications on my cell phone, but on a desktop I don't need that vertical window taking up the space. I would rather have the post content in the second window be twice as wide. Also, the 4th one doesn't need to be that wide. They could shorten to pretty much half the width and give that space to more of the content posts.

Let's say I registered an account on a server, that's located in Germany. If it happens, that this server goes into a black hole, does that mean I'll lose my account, and I'll have to start all over again?

how is the moderator selected ? voted ? are rules made by that moderator ?

This video is getting more milage. Muskrat has decided to outright bar posting mastodon links to profile (I squeeked in just before tehe ban hit, ) and flags mastodon links with a 'sensetive content warning' scare screen.


All, apparently, because Elon didn't like that someone was posting publicly avalible data about his jet's location. that and 'can't allow competetors.'

I predict in time Twitter will become federated just to stay relevant. But that won't be fora long while.
