Carburetor Selection & What a Carburetor Does - Summit Racing Quick Flicks

A carburetor is an air valve that controls the amount of air and fuel entering the engine.
The positioning of the butterfly in carburetor dictates how much air and fuel enter the engine. CFM (Cubic Feet per Minute), as described in the video, defines the amount of air and fuel passing through the carburetor. There are three factors when deciding which carburetor is right for your application:
1. Engine cubic inch displacement (CID)
2. Maximum rpm
3. How will the vehicle will be used
The formula for selecting the proper CFM is:
CID x Maximum RPM x Volume Efficiency / 3456

question?
how does this apply to vehicles that have duel quads or trips?how do u make those applications function?

Lack of power under load can be attributed to a few things. First, is the float level at factory specification? Is the accelerator pump in the carb working? Is the load enrichment circuit operating properly? You could also check and verify the timing advance is operating. This is usually a combination of vacuum and mechanical (centrifugal) types of advance.

Which carburetor should I use with a manual transmission for street use?

My 1984 Honda spree starts right up and idle seems good, but when I give it gas especially going up a small hill the motor bogs down and stops. I tore apart the whole carb and cleaned it with carb cleaner. drained gas tank and filled it with high octane. cleaned spark plug and gap is correct. I was told i might have a gasket leaking air some where? any sugestions?

Hello I have a 1983 cutlass supreme v6 single barrel carburetor. Which double barrel carburetor would be for my cutlass?

Last, have the ignition system checked by a qualified tech with an ignition oscilloscope. One more thing, make sure that any fuel hoses (especially on top of the fuel tank) are not suctioning shut; cutting off the fuel flow to the fuel pump assuming it is mechanical and mounted at the engine. A diagnostic fuel pressure gauge where you can see it under load would give you an indication of this!

BluePrint Engines dyno'd my 408 with a 750cfm.  your math says I need 600cfm for street.  I was already planning on (and had great result on a 318) a 650cfm Demon.  What result should I expect on my 408 with a 650?  Thanks for the info.

great video! just wondering if you have a video that explains the best carb for marine applications? I noticed that Holley makes both a vac. secondary and mechanical sec. carb for marine use...which is better for the water?

I got a Road Demon 625 cfm vacuum secondaries Carburetor, I noticed where a squirter for the secondary goes, there is a hole there. Is that the way it is designed, this is looking at the carb from the the top between the boosters?

If I have a mechanical choke Q-jet and want to switch to a Street Demon, how would I set up the electric choke??

Yes, a vacuum secondary carburetor can be used on a vehicle that has a manual transmission. The only time we do not recommend this is if the vehicle is extremely light (2, 500 lbs. or less) due to the engine not being under enough load to actuate the secondaries. In this case we recommend going with a mechanical secondary carburetor instead.
