The 42 years is a reference not to Ahaziah’s age but where he came in the history of his family’s dynasty. Ahaziah was in the family of King Ahab of Israel, which 2 Chronicles 22:2–3 points out. That dynasty began with his grandfather Omri. The lengths of the reigns of all the kings in this family are as follows:

Omri — 6 years
Ahab — 22 years
Ahaziah (of Israel) — 2 years
Joram (or Jehoram) — 12 years

Total — 42 years

Since Ahaziah began to reign in Judah in the last year of Joram’s reign in Israel (2 Kings 8:25), Ahaziah would have ascended the throne in the 42nd year of that dynasty in Israel, which explains his being called “a son of forty-two years.” Ahaziah was a “son” of the dynasty of Omri, which was in its 42nd year when he took the throne. If this theory is correct, then 2 Kings 8:26 gives us Ahaziah’s age, and 2 Chronicles 22:2 gives us the age of his family’s rule.

I watched a video that led me here, and then when I read Psalm 18 this morning, verse 30 popped in my awareness, saying "This God—His way is perfect; the word of the LORD proves true; he is a shield for all those who take refuge in Him."

Let's be vigilant, but not get paranoid or caught up with the numbers or scribal errors. What matters is that we believe that God's Word is the living and active force!

This is confusing! I know the Bible does not contridict itself. The enemy likes to challenge me and I hate it. I see a Muslim stating this debunks the Bible.

I have heard of a 5th option. There was a battle during which his rule was suspended. He first became king aged 22 and rebecame king aged 42.

He became king twice because he was kidnapped in war when he was 22, gone for 20yrs, came back when he was 42, and was crowned king again. If you read the bible this is all so simple🙏

There were two Kings named Ahaziah one was king of Judah (Joram/Jehoram’s son) who reigned for one year 2 Chronicles 22:1-3 and the other King of Israel (Ahab’s son) who reigned two years (1 Kings 22:51)

Fun fact: Both of the King Ahaziahs were related through Athaliah the wife of Joram who is the daughter (or granddaughter) of Omri, Ahabs father

I learned this at Bible college a few weeks ago. We were told the 4th reason for the discrepancy.
At the end of the day only the original autograph was completely inerrant, but we still have very accurate and reliable Bible today that we can trust.

God's word is His word and if you believe He is God then you know He's powerful and mighty enough to know He protects His word. The Holy Spirit guids us as followers of Christ. Go to Him when you read and the Holy Spirit will show you.

Thank you for the explanation.I wouldn't mind if there was a discrepancy. People write the bible, and it stated clearly when God is quoted. The bible as a whole, from start to finish, shows God's will, and how He is involved through millennia.

Your description is nice but you've shown a man smoking with a key in his hand. It leads to misrepresentation. Kindly check it during editings

The Word is truth
The truth can only be known by someone who can discern true and false
You can only do this with the Holy Spirit
It will give you understanding and discernment thats why we can understand things people in 1800s understood with the Holy Spirit whatever happened that there are errors in the bible anyone with the Holy Spirit will be able to discern true and false

God has put parables, paradoxes and what seem to be "contradictions" in His Word on purpose as stumbling blocks to those who choose to reject Him and His Holy Word...they are there to reveal the carnal minded who lean on their own understanding...it is they who see contradictions and mock The Word...but for the rest of us who have chose to accept the free Gift of salvation and His Holy Word, He reveals to us the Truth and ALL "contradictions" become answerable as we pursue The Truth in Scriptures. Period.

Answer:

Ahaziah reigned twice, for a period of 1 year each time. First time it began when he was 22. Second reign it began when he was 42

‭‭1 Kings‬ ‭22:51‬ ‭KJV‬‬
Ahaziah the son of Ahab began to reign over Israel in Samaria the seventeenth year of Jehoshaphat king of Judah, and reigned two years over Israel.
