This video simply shows how to record sound via microphone. The title misleads viewers in thinking Audacity records keyboard music as MIDI file !!!

Audacity is very easy to use. I use it for my video audio but never thought to record a keyboard... you can edit the music right there too. Brilliant.

To those who have a headphone/output port behind your keyboard(1/4 inches), get a audio stereo adaptor. I got a LiveWire headphone adaptor(the silver kind) from the Guitar Center for about 5-6 bucks. Fit it into one end of your 3.5mm(1/8 inch) stereo audio cable(about 4 bucks at OfficeMax). Plug that into your keyboard. Then plug the other end of your cable into your microphone port on your computer(I have a desktop). In Audacity, go down to Perferences on the Edit tab. Click on Recording. Then click on the box that says Software Playthrough. Then you should hear the sounds while you record. It works for me.

If anyone is not able to hear what they are playing.
I have a solution. And I know it will definitely work.
Go to control panel. Sound. Recording. Select Microphone and hit properties. Just as shown in the video. Then you have to Go to the "Listen" section. Tick on "Listen to this device". And select your output option in "Playback through this device". Don't forget to hit apply and then OK. I am sure this will help almost everyone. Please let me know if this works out. I will be happy if my comment helps someone.
Note : I did it on Windows 10. You can try this on your computer.

For me, recording from keyboard to computer was always an uphill battle ending up in Waterloo. This simple, short and clear video made it a no-brainer piece of cake. Those settings are a silver bullet. Thank you very much darling.

Wow. I enjoy watching this channel I have just found. I am a songwriter of sorts. lol. A single parent 12 years that used to be a live performer drummer for many years. I raised both my kids into music early on and my son is fantastic guitarist. I have been using a moxf6 and find it is just a great tool for my getting into the passion for writing. I am however still scared a bit of software side of it all. I use the sequencer lol. I am trying to learn to navigate the cubase and looking to find the easy way to just record my work from my sequencer (the real work anyway) to PC mp3 for quality audio recording. I was using my phone in quiet to record direct from monitors. lol. So anyway I thank you for your time uploading these tutorials. You are very talented and teach great material.

I am glad to find this tutorial because I didn't know how to set recording keyboard in audacity. I am using a Midi controller Arturia MiniLab, but I couldn't to use . When recorded any sound there was a noise only. Now I will try to do as you show. Greetings

Was this keyboard recorded over microphone? How about showing microphone placement!!
Was this keyboard recorded via midi out?... No way. Not with recording device selected shown here. And I believe Audacity does not recognize Midi anyway. This video didn't show mutch.

Thanks a lot. This video helped me so much. The gain was high so my keyboard sounded like it was under water or something. Now reduced to 0% and it sounds much better
