Hurling has been around for over 3000 years so we thought it was about time we shared it with our American friends. We brought a hurl and sliotar to the streets of Dublin and asked Americans to try a few basic hurling moves.

As an American, my first experience with Hurling was at a pub, in Killarney, on St. Patrick's, having my first 'technically' legal pint (was 18, which would be illegal over here). It was one of the most spectacular things I had ever seen during an already amazing experience.

In America, hurl is often used as slang for vomit. This took me a second. Haha

I did a bit of research, and there is in fact a little bit of semi-organized hurling being played at US colleges.  It's very amateur stuff though, mostly kids with no previous experience just doing it for fun.  Men and women play on the same team.  Nevertheless, a hurling team from Montana was willing to travel to New York to win a national tournament (about the same distance as Ireland to Greece), so the players must really like the sport.

The game of Hurley (or Hurling) is 3, 000 years old, it is the fastest field sport in the world -- 'Shinty' is its Scottish equivalent.

There are actually alot of Hurling clubs in the United States! I play for the Hoboken Guards in New Jersey and I founded a club at my University. There are clubs all over New York, Boston, Chicago, and San Francisco. I have played every major American sport and there is nothing that compares to the passion and skill both players and the fans have for the game! My biggest regret is not sticking with hurling when I was a young lad. Best sport in the world, and it helps for picking up a few birds as well :D

Just finished watching some Hurling highlight videos.  This sport would definitely appeal to some Americans.  It looks faster and more active than lacrosse.
