Messy bun nowadays isn't just a messy bun, it's a hairstyle, i.e styled hair. It's the equivalent to the no make-up look. Takes effort. That is, more effort than not wearing make up at all or in the case of hair - more effort than making a raw messy bun like anyone could. I seriously had to go try this right now. I found it easier to use a bulky scrunchie on the first pony and then a thin one on top. It helps to twist ur bangs up and bite em while ya do the ponytailing. It actually does look really cute.

I have super frizzy ends and a bun tucks that off my face, so this bun accentuates the mess. Idk how I feel about it. I kinda like it. Idk. I appreciate learning it though. Thank you!

Of course, it looks fabulous. But a messy bun for me it something that I losen up during the day several times, in order e. g. to massage my scalp or to leave my hair open for a short period of time. And then to do a messy bun that does not lasts more than 2 seconds. So for me this is an updo but not a messy bun... Though it looks really nice... 🥰
