To make it clear, I did not name this test, nor did I design it, it’s just something I saw online that others were doing and I wanted to try it.

It’s just a bit of fun.
No ageism, offence or anything else nasty.

It’s actually a good reminder for us all, no matter what age, to take care of ourself with balance and exercise.

I'm a 70yr old bloke Used to be able to do the Tree Stance for hours, no prob, then 2yrs ago, I had major heart surgery + arteries(arteries are taken from your legs) I only got my basic balance back, this year and I still don't have full touch sensation in either of my legs, So enjoy your youth as long as it lasts,

I could have told you you weren't an old man before you even started. My eyes haven't failed me yet! 😁

Curious why they call it the “old man test” when 80% of those under 40 can’t do it. It should be called the “guy who can’t balance for 8 seconds” test.

Going to try this if I can find my shoes and socks

I wasn’t able to do this in my 40s let alone now in my 70s.

my dad, who was upward of 85 yrs old with parkinson's, balance, and mobility issues, etc. watched me do exactly this one time just because that's how i like to do it, and he shook his head in amazement and said he could never do that. that was the first time i really appreciated the importance of all those core muscles. and for the record, even though his physical body had issues, my dad never qualified as "old." he was still up for trying new things, going new places, learning new stuff, and having all of the fun. so i'm with you re the name! :)

I put my shoes on like this in the morning all the time, because I have cats who cover the couch with fur and I don't want to sit and get my work clothes covered in fur in the morning. So I just put my shoes on standing up.

💕😀xx Thanks Laura. I’m a 58 year old woman with severe osteoporosis and managed the task first time, no practise. WELL pleased. 🥰🎉

I'm 71 and I have enough trouble standing and walking on two feet, let alone balance on one. If I ever get pulled over on the road and the officer wants to do a sobriety test, I'll insist on a breathalyzer. Because I'd never pass the 'one foot in front of the other, heel to toe' thing. In the video, the sticking the one leg straight back, while bending forward was interesting. I laughed thinking about which direction I'd fall attempting that. When I'm sitting and putting my socks on in the morning, there's no guarantee that I won't do a face plant. Let alone standing and doing it. Don't get old....it sucks and I do not recommend it.

No problem and I am 55. However, I've been taking yoga for the last five years and that has really helped with my balance. I would highly recommend yoga if you are having balance issues.

I’m a 62 year old man and at no point in my life could I do that.

That's so cool. I've been doing a lot of one legged, balance exercises for a year or so now, and I've been working on putting on my socks and shoes that exact way. It's way harder than Laura makes it look, but it's an excellent exercise!

65 now and can confirm this is valid. It’s usually the unwanted weight around the middle that makes it difficult. I have gone from a natural athlete in my 50’s to feeling age and arthritis. When I’m lean I can do anything and I quit drinking for those reasons. Still have the injuries of a lifetime of trade and combat sports but these become manageable when care is taken with weight. The extra pressure on the diaphragm causes breathing problems. Poor sleep will also make everything hurt, so it is vital to ensure you get quality sleep. I can still pass this test - better on some days than others. 👍🏻

We have an old man test here in The States. It consists of speaking a single coherent sentence without a teleprompter or simply sitting down at a war memorial service without poopin' oneself.

It's a tough one.

I'm out for a morning run in the countryside. I feel something spiky under my foot. I take off my shoe. I turn it upside down and shake it. Then I run my hand under my foot, only to find that the spiky thing is indeed a thorn that's in my sock. So I take that off too. I carefully pluck the thorn out of my inverted sock. I straighten the sock, wear it, put on my shoe and lace it. I do all this standing on one leg because the ground is wet and there's nowhere to put my foot up on.

I have done this half a dozen or so times without realising it meant anything.

I guess I pass the test. I'm an old man.
🤷🏻‍♂️

Thanks Laura. You’ve given me a new goal. I am a stroke survivor, and I’m always pushing my balance issue. I’m practicing this in the hallway for safety and support. Thanks again.

on a silimar theme ..Don't let the old man in ..is a Clint Eastwood expression, the idea that once we think like an old (wo)man we become one ...
