The only reason why I wash “new” clothes is because I’m just assuming another person has already wore them before either because they bought them and then returned them or just to see if they fits them or how they look on them.

Don't wash just your clothes. Wash anything that's washable after you buy it. Bought a new cup? Wash it. New jeans? Wash it. Anything that you put food on? Wash it. I've worked at Walmart and can tell you that thing probably fell under a shelf at some point and was left to collect dust and dirt before being gently brushed off and put back on the shelf for purchase.

If you want to know if you wash something, ask yourself if you would use it if you knew where it has been.

Yeah, I found this out working retail. I was part of the support teams putting out the new clothes when they came in. Was not unheard for someone to break out in a rash after a shift. From then on, I've refused to wear new clothes without washing them first.

I recently bought a cotton hoodie dress thing that smelled STRONGLY of formaldehyde. It took 2-3 soakings in baking soda (mightve tried vinegar one of those times too) and a couple laundry washes to finally remove the smell. Supposedly, the soakings and an air dry do evaporate the formaldehyde.

Now it makes sense why it looked so pristine and perfectly pressed on the rack at the store, as if it were freshly ironed.
