As a cop we always told people walk against traffic it is better to see. What is comming toward you gives you chance to get out of the way.

I was on my ebike going like 25 in a 30 on the shoulder and a guy passed me screaming "use the sidewalk" like yeah that's 1 illegal and 2 extremely unsafe

I had a cop try to give me a ticket for riding on the wrong side once and he asked why i would do such a thing and i told him i feel more safe seeing the cars coming at me than coming up behind me if i can see a car doing stupid sht before they get to me i have a better chance of avoiding getting turned into road kill and when I can't see the drunk swerving behind me I can't avoid him and he stood there thinking about it for a good 20 seconds and said honestly that's the smartest response I've ever heard and I've never thought about it that way before and he told me to stay safe and took off

Reminds me of this old Galician joke:
Manolo is driving down the highway when he turns on the radio. Suddenly, he sees a car coming straight at him, honking like crazy.

Walking against traffic is quite common all over the world. You see the cars coming and are less likely to get hit from behind at 50mph. If you are going the wrong way it is your duty to move out of the way and allow the people going the right way to pass freely
