After nearly 6 months we've got the next entry in the Apple Silicon lineup, this time it's a brand new design made specifically for Apple Silicon! The new iMac promises to match the M1 chips power with a bold new design direction for the iMac. It looks pretty great! Is this the Apple Silicon iMac redesign we've been waiting for?

What do you think of the new iMac design? Do you like it?

I am very disappointed there isn't a gray/black version, it would've looked great

It would've needed black bezels though.

No Space Grey makes me think the larger iMac will be a >30" iMac Pro and come in Space Grey. That's what I wanted to see.

I really wanted a backlit magic keyboard.

The new iMac looks good at every angle except for the one angle that you look at most of the time. Seriously, it should have gotten black bezels, not white. Also, if the iMac was going to keep the chin, why did they move the Apple logo? It’s pretty wasteful design. I still acknowledge the new iMac looks better overall than last generation. But it could have been so much better. On the bright side, at least the iPad Pro got a rather major upgrade, getting the M1 chip, Thunderbolt 3, 8 to 16 GB of ram, and miniLED on the 12.9” model.

Touch ID on the magic keyboard is a win!

All i'll say is that I'm very glad I went for the 16GB M1 Mini, extremely happy with it, sits under my desk and connected to an ultrawide LG monitor looks awesome. Those white bezels are KILLING me, and the lack of the apple logo on that big chin bugs me for some reason, there's a lot of nothing.

$1700 configuration only has 8GB memory? I’ll wait for the M1X in the Fall 😡

I can get over the white bezel...but the secondary shade is awful....RED & pink? common. All red with black bezel would have been sick!

Overall a well-received event, but my one gripe about the iMac was the fact that certain colors (and a freakin' ethernet port) requires a 200 dollar upgrade.
A bit ridiculous if you ask me.

Those colourful iMacs gave me serious late 90s iMac nostalgia. (Never owned one but I was seriously in love.)

(edited to add...) I hope an eventual iMac Pro comes with extra ports (especially USB-A and SD card slot) and in space grey with black bezels.

While the new design looks impressive, I'll be waiting until the M1X chip and 32 Gb of memory land before I buy one.

Yes, the machine looks great, but what about a $1700 price with a 512GB SSD and 8GB memory? What kind of deal is that?

I don’t think I like the white bezels, but I figure a little electrical tape could fix that if I couldn’t adjust

256 GB Storage on iMac: Yes.

My major complaint's no space gray option, ethernet limited to higher tier, and no 16gb ram option. The price is annoying, but that cost is primarily things like display and speakers etc. It almost feels like their unifying their lineup in a way that each generation of processor release will immediately update their whole product lineup from MacBook Air, to iMac. From a cost of manufacturing perspective, and the general power of the M1 chip, this makes for a solid product line using much of the same components to power them, and just changing out the form factors for the use cases.

This also is the unveiling of what Mac has always strived for, and that is a universal experience across devices. Mac has always wanted the experience on one mac to be the same on another. So, now, from a MacBook air on the go, to the iMac at home, you have the exact same experience in day to day tasks. And I'm sure that same kind of push will happen with their pro lines as well. Though now that essentially their entire lineup is devoid of user reparability and upgradeability, Apple NEEDS to implement a reasonable buyback system. Allowing for trade in of older machines towards newer machines. And they need to assign reasonable costs to replacement logic boards. This would also go towards apples goal of having a neutral carbon footprint. As things are now, many apple devices are destined to be e-waste at their end of life, as much as they want to claim neutral carbon footprint, if their devices are becoming e-waste and they are not actively seeking to reclaim or repair them to prevent them from becoming e-waste, then their footprint will never be 0.

SSDs are consumable components. When the SSD kicks the bucket in a new mac, that whole mac is dead weight. It should be a reasonable cost to take it to apple to 'replace' the SSD. While obviously its going to be a swapped out logic board, we should not be charged the cost of the whole logic board for the failure of an SSD.

I really like the new design. The front is definitely not modern, but it definitely looks retro.

The new design is superb, but I really miss the black bezel 😢😢😢 ... it should be available at least as an option 🙏🏻

I think that, with the new iMac, they’re trying to get the nostalgia from the old translucent CRT Macs

Luke, you are the best!
I’m into Mac since the very beginning in 1984. And I lived all the journey until today.
I was active in the Mac World in France but nowadays I only follow the best ones and I’m impressed a lot with the rapidity you made that video!
