Best video on the topic ever made! I was frustrated until I found this. I couldn't square up my building site easily without the tiny spikes idea. This is gold! I feel like I should pay you for the tip Paul. Thanks a ton! You have a made for TV personality too. A real pleasure to watch. Thanks.

Thanks, great instructions! I learned it in high school and college, but all I could remember was the name, "pythagorean theorem" and that it was how a perfect right angle was found. It's so simple and such a useful bit of math for everyday use!

Hi

A² + B² = C² is the Pythagorean Theorem in which the sum of the squares of the legs equals the square of the hypotenuse. And cheap calculator with Sq. root and memory  button on it can do this in 30 sec.   Say you want to sq. up a deck .pool foundation what ever  . If it was 20'wide and  40' L  enter 20X20=400 hit the memory +button  on the calculator than 40X40 memory+=again =1600 there is a button called MRC memory recall this will total it at 2000 than hit that check mark known as Sq. Root button .Your answer will be 44.72 feet . If the .72 is not your thing just put .72 in your calculator and X it by 12 this will give you the dismal  in inches .  .72X12=8.64" so about 8 1/2 " try it this is dead on for square of anything to the smallest of a inch.Once you learn this simple step you will use it all your life .   Good luck  Jerry

Hey Paul in concrete we always used 6/8/10 but it is the same and it is a simple and great way to get square. I have set up house slabs batter boards and monolithic garage slabs  you name it with this method glad to see the old school knowledge still being used ...perhaps you could show the water lvl made of clear hose for setting grade as a compliment to this vid???

Sorry, I just need a little more explanation. If i set up the initial right square and then proceed to extend my string 100 ft, how do I know the line I just created is straight? If I start another right angle at the end of the 100 ft, will it not be independent of the initial right angle? Or are you advising to use the 3-4-5 method for the entire section, after the string is extended to its desired length?
