In the United Kingdom, Gordon Brown the Chancellor of the Exchequer sold sold off 401 tonnes of gold which was 56% of the nation's gold reserves during a series of 17 auctions from July 6, 1999 until March 5, 2002 for very low prices averaging $275 per troy ounce for those who bought gold. Ironically twenty-two years later, the price of gold had risen to $2, 790.90 per troy ounce on October 31, 2024 which was a 10.15 fold increase in gold's value.

It depends on the country you stay in. In Norway we pay 25% tax on all bars. This is why we only buy 1oz coins.

Today, gold sovereigns offer the best premium, about 2.5% for the gold quantity per coin.. whereas bars are around 10% premium..

I never buy gold bars, only coins. Gold bars all have a number (like banknotes). All things with a number are easy to trace.

In the UK legal tender gold coins are free of all taxes. Bars are not. Nuff said.
